Lilian and I were twins separated at-well I'm not really sure. But it was when we were really really young. I never bothered to ask because I was livid when I discovered it. And our parents weren't planning on telling either of us and how we found out was totally by accident.

I lived with my dad and my life was average. We lived in a fairly average home, I went to a public school, basic normal things. You know.

I've never been satisfied with my life. I'd always wanted to live a celebrity life. I loved to sing and I always held mini concerts in my room or the shower…or anywhere that I was alone.

Dad couldn't afford singing lessons for me and I was so sad about it. I was a good singer and I felt that my talent was going to waste.

But I didn't stop because of that of course. I'd always admired famous singers. And once I got the chance, I wasn't going to let it go to waste.

Anyways, one day my dad and I were walking out of the grocery store. We were on our way to the car when I saw a girl and a woman who looked so much like her walking by.

They both spotted us too and slowed down as they did. The girl started to whisper to her mother, stealing glances at us at the same time.

We got to the car soon. Dad didn't seem to notice. Or he did and tried to ignore it but I didn't let it pass.

“Dad?"

“Hm?” he asked as I dropped the bags at the back of the car.

“That woman and her daughter, they seem…familiar.”

“Hmm, what a strange thing,” he replied with a short, dry laugh and I raised my brow at him. He was about to get into the car but I stopped him.

“Dad come on, if it was just the girl, I'd say ooh I have a lookalike but the mom looks like her too! It's crazy! Like I'm looking in a mirror!”

“Beautiful coincidences like that happen darling. Now get in the car let's go!”

I sighed and was about to give in but to my surprise the girl was running towards me.

“Hey!” she said waving frantically. I gave her a once over.

She was wearing clothes that looked expensive and well…she looked expensive. Pretty face, amazing hair, flawless skin.

“Hi,” I replied.

“You look so much like me!” we said at the same time.

Suddenly her mother walked over.

“Hello,” she said and waved her perfectly manicured hands at me. “My daughter Lilian here became suddenly so interested in you ever since she saw you and your father walk out of the grocery store. I wonder why?”

“Mom, I've been saying it to you multiple times, it's because we look so alike!”

“Hmm, really? I did not notice that.”

“Alright, Margaret. Let's stop this and tell them the truth," dad spoke up.

“What?” we said in unison.

My father motioned for us to calm down. He took a deep breath and began.

“Lotus, Lilian, you're twins. Your mother and I…we had problems when you were born unfortunately. We decided to get a divorce and we left with either of you. And we didn't want to tell you about each other because we knew you'd be mad but…you've already found out now. We're sorry.”

I stared at my dad incredulously and then at my mother, who I never knew. I thought she had died or left and started another family. There were actually many theories I had. That was because dad never talked about her. He always found a way to evade the topic. But I guess fate had other plans.

Lilian and I talked a lot after that. We got to know so much about each other. She told me that she was a singer and she and our mum were rich. I went to her house once and I was amazed. Everything was posh, everything she had was luxurious. I couldn't stop thinking about all the stories she told me about the vacations she'd had. All the concerts she performed at, the interviews, the magazines she modelled for.

…I was jealous of her. Her life was so perfect and mine was trash. And it wasn't fair. Why did I have to get stuck with the average parent?

We still lived that way and as time passed, I became more and more jealous of Lilian. At a point I think I hated her.

Lilian just finished a concert and was about to get into her limo. I was waiting for her beside the car and before she got in, she spotted me.

“Hey,” she said as she ran over to me. “Did you like the show?”

I pursed my lips and folded my arms.
“Why is everything always about you?”

“What?” she said and took a step back. “I just came to–”

“Yeah, I know. Rub it in my face that I'm not pretty and cool and popular like you are.”

“What're you talking about?”

“It's not fair! Why did I get to have this kind of life? I've always wanted to be perfect like you. But no, I had to get stuck with the less perfect parent.”

“Don't let your father hear you Lotus. Did you know that mum took most of dad's money when he left, took the house that I live in now and just left him to suffer? Your dad had to work his ass off to get the house you live in now and do other things for you too. And we let you come over to the house anytime you want!”

“It's not just that! Your life is perfect! You look perfect! You're a celebrity, you have everything you want.”

She scoffed. “You think my life is perfect! I don't hang out with kids my own age like you, I don't know what it's like to have a normal life. I'm always behind a camera or on stage. Mom doesn't really care much about me like dad does to you. She only cares about the money I bring in…” she was sobbing now.

How dramatic.

“Of course my life is amazing in some ways but I just wish I grew up normally like you. And Lotus…you're so much prettier than I am.”

With that she got into the limo and after a few seconds, it sped off, leaving me on the roadside, speechless.
