March 18: Write a fantasy short story from the 2nd person perspective
….It was a horrible realization but it was pretty interesting how it happened but I don't wish for it to happen to anyone.
You wanna hear about why I'm now stuck in the a dark abyss, reliving the story of my life from when I moved to town till a particular day during the holidays nonstop?
Of course you do.
***
“Dude! Gimme back my phone!” Matthew screamed and chased after me.
I laughed maniacally as I sped through the street, my feet echoing on the concrete.
“You're an asshole you know that right?!” he yelled as he chased after me.
Besides us, the street was empty, save for the old couple walking by with their dog.
It was a bit after dusk and the streetlights where already illuminating the night, causing shadows to dance around the walls and the ground as the plants l, objects and our fleeing bodies moved about.
My pace quickened as I heard Matt's heavy footsteps behind me.
“I swear to God!” he began and I couldn't help but laugh at how pissed he sounded. “Once I get you, you're dead Nicholas!”
It was hilarious but I was aware that Matt was a lot stronger than I was so I couldn't let him catch up to me. At least not tonight.
He'd probably forget about it by tomorrow morning.
Hopefully…
Even though I was going to be with his phone all night.I ran a few more meters and suddenly I couldn't hear the sound of Matt's footsteps anymore.
I sighed in relief. I'd lost him. Hopefully.
But it only took me a moment to realise.
Something wasn't right.I listened carefully but if felt like every sound had suddenly disappeared. I couldn't hear the usual faint horns and screeches from cars in the streets nearby. The crickets had gone silent, the whistle and rustle of the trees and bushes had stopped, even as I felt a cold breeze fly by and even more terrifying…as I called out Matt's name, nothing came out.
It was when I gazed around me that I realised that everything had paused. Well, except for the wind that kept blowing my hair into my eyes.
I tucked Matt's phone into my back pocket and tied my hair back with the band on my wrist.
I decided to run back to the spot I stood before I took off.
I was only halfway there but I stopped abruptly in the middle of the road, my eyes wide and my mouth hanging open in confusion and surprise.
Matt was standing still, in a position that showed he was in the middle of a sprint. I walked over to him slowly and gazed in awe.
“What the hell?” was supposed to come out of my mouth as I waved my hand I front of his face but nothing came.
I ran a few blocks down and I halted abruptly when I saw the old couple and their dog in the same position I saw them in last.
I turned around three hundred and sixty degrees and took in a sharp breath as everything sank in.
No sounds, no movement.
Was it the entire world or was it just Madison Street?
A sudden loud sound echoed all around me and I shook with the earth.
I fell to my knees beacuse the quaking was so much I couldn't stand on my feet.
“What do you think? Should I end it here?”
It sounded like a female voice. I gigantic female one.
I couldn't tell where it was coming from. It sounded like it came from…the sky.
Well, actually, it was coming from everywhere.
I glanced around in fright as the loud voice spoke again.“I think Matt should catch up with him and get that phone back. Then they have a playful fight and the scene ends with laughter.”
“Ahh, that sounds perfect! Thanks!’
“Anytime. It's an amazing book.”
The world went silent again.
Scene...?
Book...?
My head spun and my heart raced.
Suddenly, everything resumed. Horns blared, crickets chirped, faint laughter came from a house nearby and my shoulders slumped.
I was caught off guard and I saw myself tumbling to the ground with Matt above me, his face stern and his brows raised.
I blinked at him.
“Where is it?”
“Where's what?”
His stoic expression didn't waver.
“Where is my phone?”A smirk tugged at my lips. “What’re you talking about?”
He sighed and got up from the floor and I let out a sigh of my own.
“Dude something weird happened just a few moments ago.”
“I'm not listening to you until you gimme my phone back.”
I groaned. “I told you, it ain't–”
Faint music blared from my back pocket and I cringed.
He held his hand out with a smug look and I gave him the phone back.
“Okay, now that's settled. You have to listen to me!”
“Mmhmm.” He pocketed the phone.
“I don't think we're real.”
The expression on his face was so clear he didn't need to mutter the “huh?” that got me feeling like I was insane.
“Everything paused for a while."
He let out a short laugh and started to walk home.
“Dude!” I ran to catch up with him. “I'm serious. Everything paused. There was no sound anywhere. You were a statue! Like this!”
I made a perfect representation of his stance and that only got him laughing harder.
“Goodbye, I guess," I muttered in resignation and disappointment.
“Later! Have some rest, you need it,” he said with a titter and I rolled my eyes.
I stood there on the empty roadside with my arms folded across my chest.
Was I the character of a novel? And if I was, was I a main or background character?
Wait, hold up, that's not necessary.
But I didn't get it.
I tried to recall what if heard a few minutes ago.Matt gets his phone back and there's laughter before the story ends....
Strangely, that was what just happened. But not exactly.
But was the dialogue supposed to go like that? Was Matt meant to catch me that way? Wasn't it meant to be both of us laughing?
If we were characters in a story, were the writers not controlling what I was saying and doing?
The clouds darkened and my head snapped upward.
Yes, it was already late but was the cloud meant to turn this black?
“And…the end.”
The ground trembled. The clouds darkened even more. The world seemed to be closing up on me.
Until finally…it did.
