...."It is remarkable," the old man mummured as he watched the animals move about inside the enormous cage they were put in.
"It is brilliant, isn't it?" Andre asked with a proud smile.
The whole thing was his idea.
He was sitting alone in a café one morning, enjoying his cup of coffee, when the idea struck him like lightning.
Imagine I had a cage so big that I could fit in every animal there is...
He didn't care about their habitats, their mode of feeding, their mates, young ones, preys or predators.
He just wanted to do this.
"When the animals of the jungle are separated and are hunting or surviving on their own, the Lion is king. He can easily kill them," Alan, the old man said, "but I notice that as you put them all together in a cage they realise that they all have a common enemy. And united, the Lion stands no chance."
Andre nodded and smiled warily, "actually...I never thought about it like that. Basically I just wanted it to be a show of survival of the fittest."
"It's more than that son," Alan said scornfully and Andre glanced at him with a confused expression.
"There are many things I've noticed and there're many theories and questions in my head.""Like what, father?"
"Like for example, what if the herbivores, in the absence of any plants, turn into carnivores because they need to survive? What if the birds forget how to fly?"
Andre dragged his hand through his hair and chuckled, "slow down dad."
His father's eyes shone with excitement as more thoughts whirled around in his mind.
"You think that this is just a simple game of survival but it's actually a very interesting experiment."
"Now I'm curious, father. Please tell me more of these theories and questions."
Alan beamed and went on, "there might be new breeds of animals created. I mean, since one gender might not see the opposite gender of their species, they might end up breeding with others. We could have lion-birds or horse-wolves or worse..."
My eyes widened.
"Domestic animals might become wild because they don't have their human masters to feed them anymore and like you said, survival of the fittest."
"There will be terrible competition and there might be a lot of changes. It is believed that there is always competition between living things.
"But we're actually helping one another. Plants, lower animals and us humans."
Andre leaned backwards with a confused expression and folded his arms, "how father? We kill plants and animals. Plants and animals kill us. Animals kill plants and us."
His father chuckled.
"There's always evil and good son. Let us focus on the good now. Some animals are fond of their masters and they can be used to guard us human beings. They are incredibly helpful, even when they're killed, they provide us with food and other beneficial products. Some of us humans love animals a lot. We own animal shelters and we buy pets. We take care of them so much. We have vets that treat them when they're ill, we even have laws against poaching to stop the killing of these animals."We also help to cultivate plants. We produce fertilizers that help them to maintain a good health. We have pest control. Farmers work on their farms everyday! We grow flowers! We love them!We grow trees, we recycle to save them. There are laws on forest conservation. Dads spend a lot of time mowing their lawn to keep the grass pretty.
"And finally...plants. They provide food for the animals, they give us oxygen to live. Sometimes they contain herbs to help with some kind of injury or illness. They attract many animals! Many pretty ones, like the bees, the butterflies–"
"Dad that's enough," Andre said with a laugh.
His dad smiled, "you get it now? All living things are like frenemies. We compete with each other but we still care."
Alan sighed, "wow."
