CHAPTER 56

HAEWON'S POV

Haewon hurriedly exited the arena and made her way out of the building before anyone would come up to her. A million thoughts were running in her head but at least she knew that would hopefully ease Jake's mind about them.

She did on full impulse, Haewon couldn't bare the thought of Jake doing bad at what he's good at because he was upset because of her.

Haewon really liked Jake. And maybe in a perfect world she would be with him in a heart beat but it wasn't that easy for her. Her pride and ego was in the way, and she wasn't ready to get it go.

The game was still going on and was nearing the end of the match. Everyone was holding their breath waiting for either team to break the tie.

NIKI'S POV

Niki was working hard in getting a goal so the can break ahead. As his team mate finally got the ball and was about to pass it to him the opposing team ran over to him with the ball but an unexpected collision happened and collided with Niki, hitting his shin.

Eunchae quickly stoof up in shock and concern as he saw him go down. The referee called for a break to check on Niki. The whole crowd yelled in disappointment.

Niki grunted in pain as he looked at the damage. His coach called it to get him medical help and keep the game going. Jake and Yeonjun rushed over to Niki. 

"We'll come see you after this okay." Jake assured Niki.

"Yeah, right after you guys win." Niki winces in pain but managed to give them a smile.

Yeonjun and Jake just nodded in agreement.

A group of medics came over and helped him out of the field. Eunchae quickly scooted out of her row with Jungwon following right behind her to follow Niki.

JAKE'S POV

Jake had a lot in his mind right now. With Niki getting hurt and Haewon, this only fueled him win the game. It was all a blur but Jake managed to get a hold of the ball and score his team the winning goal.

The crowd cheered and his teammates runs over to him in celebration.

Jake couldn't even think but managed his way out of the field despite everyone trying to get his attention to congratulate and praise him.

His head was a mess. He ran out of the field looking if Haewon was still around but she wasn't anywhere in the crowd. He ran into the locker room and quickly grabbed his things to go and see if Niki is okay at the medical center.

He bumps into Yeonjun that was looking for him since he left the field without a word.

Yeonjun just grabs his shoulders. "You go see President Haewon. We'll go see is Niki is okay, alright?" He said to him to assure him

Jake sighed as his teammate understood that he was stressed. "Tell him I'll be there in a little bit okay." Jake added.

"I'll text you if anything." Yeonjun just patted his shoulder. "Go." He said.

Jake bolts out and headed out to his car. He quickly shoved his gym back into his car and hops in. He pulled out his phone to text Haewon.

*text*

Jake: hey where are you?
Haewon: I'm at home
Jake: I'm driving there now
Haewon: oh okay

Jake tossed his phone at the passenger seat and drove to Haewon's apartment.

He finally makes it over to her apartment grabbing only his phone before heading in.

Jake runs in and goes in the elevator. He was happy at what Haewon said to him at the field but something about the look in her face then made him feel uneasy.

He reached her apartment door and rang the doorbell. It didn't take long for Haewon to answer the door.

Haewon had a concerned look on her face. "Jake...come in."

Jake can feel his heart jump out of his chest. He slowly made it inside and felt a weird energy.

"I heard what happened, is Niki okay-" Haewon started before she was cut off.

"Did you mean what you said back there?" Jake said cutting to the chase. Jake didn't even know if he wanted to know.

Haewon sighed before explaining herself. "Jake, I really like you. I really really do." She said pausing, thinking carefully what to say next. "But I don't think I'm ready to let go of my ego. I can't get myself to just not care about what people think."

"So you lied to me?" Jake said with a hint of hurt in his voice.

"I did, but I also didn't." She said as her voice started to quiver. "I never expected you to just come into my life like this, Jake. I was totally unprepared. I wanna be with you but I don't think I'm ready for that. You're so nice and gentle with me but I can't be the girlfriend you want to show off." She breathed in trying to hold back her tears. "I don't want to keep hurting you." Haewon said looking up to him as the tears finally fell.

Jake held both of her hands and looked into her eyes. "I can do what ever you want. As I said before. I can even wait, for as long as it takes." Jake said not giving up.

Haewon blinked and wiped her tears. "I don't want you to wait either. I can't do that to you. I dont want you to miss out on someone that's everything you want in life."

Jake pulls her into a hug and squeezed her tight. He knew Haewon's mind was made up. He thought karma was real from all those hearts he broke, but his felt like all of them combined.

He pulled away and cupped her face and kissed her forehead. "Haewon, I love you." He said seriously. "And next time I say it, I hope you say it back." He said before leaving.

Haewon started to cry even more as the door closed. She couldn't hold back anymore. She felt her heart break but she knew she didn't deserve him.

Jake made his way to the medical center and checked on Niki. All his teammates were there to see Niki and also praise Jake for his winning goal. Jake faked a smile and laughed with his teammates. Some even teased him about the kiss. But he shot it down by just ignoring it.

He makes it to Niki who was on a hospital bed.

"What did they say? Does it hurt." Jake asked Niki.

"Yeah a little, they got an xray and I'm prolly going to have a cast or something." Niki responded back.

"Shit bro, I hope it's not that bad." Jake said in shock.

"Yeah, I'll be fine. So you and Haewon?" Niki said to downplay it knowing this is a big deal if you're an athlete.

"Nah. She rejected me." Jake just said with no details

"Damn, sorry bro." Niki said not wanting to push.

"Yeah, I'm gonna head out though. It's been a night." Jake said trying to make an exit.

"Okay bro. Stay safe. Thanks for coming to see me." Niki said gratefully.

Jake left and drives home. He parks his car in the garage. He hangs up in his keys and walks in the house. His mom was still in the kitchen making hot tea. His mom eye lit up and walks over to him to give him a hug and congratulate him.

"My baby, congratulations!" She said as she walked over to him and hugged him.

Jake just leaned down and rested his head on her shoulder and finally broke and let his tears fall.

His mom was surprised that he was crying but still comforted him not wanting to make him more upset and just wanted to be there for him. "It's okay, it's okay." She said as she rubbed his back.
