A few people had a stomach bug. Which was freaking Sami out a little.
If things got out of hand, they could have a epidemic. And he could remember last time. Danny, almost choking on his own blood in the prison.
His nightmares were still bad, but because Rosita was sick, he had Coco more. She was like an anchor, keeping his thoughts in the present. It didn't always work. Sometimes he'd be feeding her, and she'd cough, and he'd be back in the barn. But he was doing better with her. He could see, and that was nice.
The only thing the doctors prescribed was hydration. It made him feel useless.
"Drink up that Daddy/daughter shit while you can." Dante said, as Sami wrote in his notebook who was sick. "Cause they grow up so fast. Yes they do."
He put his face beside Coco's, making weird noises at her.
"Yeah, okay, back off." Sami took a step away from him. "No creepy baby voice."
"Right, sorry." Dante stood.
"If she starts talking weird, I will blame it on you." Sami wrote the most recent infection name on his book.
"As you should. Totally would be my bad. And not your accent."
He narrowed his eyes at him. "I'm still technically your bosses boss, Dante. I'm head of the council Siddiq's on. Could abuse said power."
he sighed. "That you can, handsome."
"I'm gonna check on everyone else, tell them to come here." Sami stood straighter, heading to the door. "Let me know if there's any changes."
"Yep. And you let me know if you want me to . . . check a peep at Rosita." He smirked. "you know, check she's on the mend."
Sami glared at him.
"You'll abuse that power. Right. Got it."
Sami made his way outside, looking down at Coco, who was looking around from his arm. She was still little, but she could support herself. He'd wrapped her in her blanket, but with a loose hood on it so her head didn't look to cold, even with her hat. She looked adorable.
They made a trip around Alexandria, checking everyone and everything was on time. He told people to head to the infirmary if they feel sick, and talked to Laura about patrols. He made sure the food and water was running like normal, showing Coco the lake. He sat at the edge of the jetty, legs crossed and tucked under himself, holding tightly to Coco sitting in the middle of his legs.
She was so curious. She was looking at the sky, at the water. But she was still little. He had to get her to bed.
"The audacity of some people." He said to her, as they walked to the house. "Dante's nice, but he's really pushing his limit recently."
Coco looked up at him, chewing the cross of his rosary beads. She kept taking it from his hand when he wasn't looking.
"That's just rude." He said, but honestly loved it. "The paint will chip off."
She held the now wet cross up, smiling.
"If it was any other baby, that would be gross, Coco. But you're lucky. Maybe I'll give you them when you're big. I got them when I was . . . what? Five? Maybe younger? hung them on my bed."
He opened the front door, walking into the dark house. They'd drawn all the blinds so Rosita would feel better.
"Yeah, I used to hold them like you do." He continued to Coco. "Then imagine an . . . what, magical dome wall? Around my house? Then I'd imagine all the bad guys being sucked out of it, then I'd imagine the magic dome wall around the entire planet, and all the bad guys would be thrown to space, and die. And I'd be safe with Nico." He shut the door.
