Three days later, Sami sat with Ezekiel in the hospital. They both had back to back tests, and Sami didn't have Coco to stop him from fainting this time, so he stuck with Ezekiel. The worst thing - this test wasn't planned, he just got a letter telling him to come in. Which meant Rosita didn't know. Which usually made her mad.

And he still had one of those changeable needles in his arm.

"Good morning, Ezekiel. Sami." Tomas walked in, smiling.

Sami shook his head, leaning back on his chair, struggling to not pass out. "Not a good morning, man."

Ezekiel chuckled. "He has a phobia of needles."

"Oh, I know. Fainted the first appointment we had together." Tomas chuckled and crouched in front of the pair. "Alright, let's get into it. So, nothing but water morning of. No foods, no solids. We need you both on empty stomachs. They're back to back, so you can gear each other up for it. "

Sami sat up, looking at him. "What?"

"Doc, we're just here for a routine check up." Jerry said, as he had come in to keep an eye on them.

The nurse taking Ezekiel's blood glanced at them. "I was told this was pre-op blood tests. To make sure they're stable enough for the surgeries."

"Surgery?" Ezekiel asked.

"To take out those tumors." Tomas said, looking at Ezeikiel's throat. "Did no one tell you?"

"I thought I was still on the list." Ezekiel said.

Sami nodded. "I've only been on it two days."

"Well . . ." Tomas looked at the clipboard in his hand. "Two of you are at the top of the list. Back to back surgeries and all."

"You're lucky." The nurse said. "Some people wait years."

"What if I can't afford it yet?" Sami asked.

"You're both paid up."

"Well, however it came to pass, I'm thrilled." Tomas smiled at them. "We're going to take good care of you two. Rest up. Ezekiel, you're Friday at nine. Samuel . . . . you're two on the same day."

Once the needles were taken out of their arms, the nurse and Tomas left, and Jerry began celebrating.

"This is so frickin' awesome!" He laughed, clapping. "Wha-what is it?"

"How'd that happen?" Sami asked. "I was probably at the end of the list, I only got on two days ago. And both of us?"

"Look, this is good news. Maybe its coincidence, maybe it's clinical error, maybe it's divine intervention, either way, don't you think you two deserve a bit of luck?"

Sami shook his head. "I'm grateful. Beyond it, but . . . I don't know."

"Don't like it?" Ezekiel asked.

Sami nodded. "So many people here are sick, some exactly like us. Why is it you and I? Even if it was someone we didn't know, but . . . it's too perfect."

Jerry sighed. "Just be happy! You two deserve a break."

Sami had work, then, but couldn't get it off his mind. It just felt weird. So many people suffering, yet him and Ezekiel were getting surgery. And the nurse said it takes years sometimes. Why were they bunked up?

Sami had been trying to work out how to word it, strangely enough, as he and Rosita walked along the large pond in the Commonwealth later that day, Coco in a stroller he was pushing. She was interested by everything, watching everything, trying to learn. It was lovely, to say the least.
