A Clue

Fred, Max told me where they found the only clue they have. It shouldnt take us too long to get there.

They walked for thirty minutes, and Fred saw something. Is this the spot Max told you about?

This is the spot you can see they roped it off. Chris is paying attention to everything around the area.

Fred begins touching things, trying to find anything that would help.

Chris looks over at him and yells, Never touch things.

Fred drops what is in his hands then turns to Chris, Why?

Whenever you track someone the first thing you start with is smell. Were wolves so we have a heightened sense of smell.

I have a lot to learn, smell never came to mind.

Come here. You smell for who was here. Also, how many of them. He starts to sniff the air.

There are a lot, some are faint, and some are stronger.

Divide the smells and isolate them.

That is hard there are just too many.

Concentrate you got this. Once you learn this you will be on your way to become a great tracker.

Fred sniffs the area then closes his eyes, I smell three large male that have been here not too long ago. Then there is a female very faint and two more males faint like hers. There is one that is faint but not as faint as the others I think is a male.

That is close, you missed two others that are with hers, but they are faint. A little practice and you will get it. Next is using your eyes to see if anything is out of place or doesnt fit the scene. Chris points to footprints and broken twigs on the ground. Most clues are left without knowing they had been left behind. Look and tell me what you see?

The branch is broken over by the red circle and then there are the size ten mens shoe print three of them out there. Someone wiped the dirt clean a while ago there isnt as many leaves, and they are spread out more.

Your eyes are better than your smell but they both need work, time will fix it. Once that is done pick up the clues you have found. Then you lightly move things over to see if there are clues that nature has hidden from us. Fred is standing there taking in every word, Chris can see the kid really wants to help and become a tracker like him.

We have been here over an hour looking for any sign of where Ray could be. I dont see anything. Fred is getting tired, so he leans on a tree.

It takes time. Chris stops in the middle of what he is saying, What is that by your head on the tree branch?

Fred turns careful not to touch it, It looks like part of a uniform.

Chris walks over I think your right kid, good job. Carefully placing the cloth in the bag. Lets go back and see if anyone can recognize the symbol on the material.

This is great we got a clue do you think it will help? Fred is so excited he keeps talking. I would love to have been part of the ones that find her.

Time will tell. Lets see where it leads us.

Max greets them as they leave the woods. You two have been gone a long time.

Fred here found a clue. We need to show it to Micah.

Good job Fred. Max pats him on the back. Micah is in the big tent.

Chris was surprised to find Jenna there talking with Micah along with another young lady.

Chris, I havent seen you in so long. She runs over and hugs him.

You have gotten even prettier than the last time I saw you. Jenna blushes at Chriss compliment.

This is Sophia the Alphas daughter she came to help.

Micah looks behind Chris and sees Fred. What is he doing with you?

He wanted to help, and he also wants to be a tracker. I took him with me, see what he found. He is going to be one of the best trackers we have with a little training. This shirt was on a tree right near where the clothes were. The people that have Ray set this pack up, they didnt realize they left us a real clue. Do any of you know who this symbol belongs to? No one answered.

Well maybe the Alpha will know where it's from. He knows the packs better than we do. Can we take it to him.

I like the way you are thinking Jenna. Sophia, could you have your father come here.

I will mind link him to see if he can come, Micah. Everybody waits while she closes her eyes and sends a message to her father. He said he could be here in about fifteen to twenty minutes. He has someone in his office.

That's good we could really use his help. Micah says, looking at Chris. I am glad you came. Chris just nods, not wanting to say anything.

At least we have something we can go on. Jenna says relieved to have something new to help find her friend.

The symbol on the material is only half the symbol. If we look through some of the books for the symbols of each pack maybe we can figure it out. If my father doesn't know. Sophy tells them.

Chris is hopeful that this will be the piece of evidence that finds Ray. While we are checking out the symbol, we need to test it and see if it can tell us anything about the pack it came from.

I'll see if I can locate a book like that in dads office or the library. While you test it. Sophia then runs to the pack house in search of the book.

I'll contact the king.

Let's wait to see if Alpha Ralph can help us first. Chris says cutting Micah off. We dont want to get his hopes up for nothing.

Chris, Micah, and Jenna are all pacing around the table, no one seems to have the patience to sit down. None of them are talking, all they keep doing is looking at each other while they wait for the Alpha. You guys need to relax before you wear yourselves out. Fed is sitting there watching them.

Alpha Im glad you made it, we finally have another clue. Micah says as he greets him.

We are hoping you can give us the information that will lead to another clue or a location. Chris adds.

Chris, Micah I will do my best to help. What is it you want me to do?

Micah hands him the symbol still in the clear plastic bag. Do you recognize this symbol?

It is only half of the symbol it looks like one of several different packs. I cant tell which one.

Doesnt each pack have their own symbol?

They do Jenna, some are very similar but not quite the same. Let me take a better look at this symbol. Absent mindedly he says, Each pack has one. I have copies of them up in my office so come with me, we'll bring this with us and see what we can figure out.

That sounds good. We need to get started on it right away. Micah is in a hurry to find her.
