KOREY

☽◯☾

Jagged branches and sharp stones pierced the soles of my feet as I ran through the forest path as fast as my legs could go. The icy wind bit at my skin, trying to dampen my senses as I searched for Blake's smell in the air.

A car was following me, trailing far behind but still managing to keep me in its sights; Chris and Isaac.

I had no idea why they were following me, but I didn't have the time to focus on it. I smelled the air again, the recent rain having heightened the smell of the earth while destroying everything else. All I had to go off were the shapes in the dark I could make out with my wolf eyes and the hope that Blake would find me instead. "Blake!"

The car behind me sped up further, the lights behind me growing closer.

Blood roared in my eyes, and my heart leapt against my ribs, trying to break out as I struggled to grasp a hold of my shift. "Blake!"

The car behind me honked twice, trying to catch my attention.

"Blake!" I screamed again, stopping curtly to smell the air for ginger and lemon, Blake's scent. "Blake!"

"Korey!" Chris Argent's voice yelled for me as the car door slammed, "I think you already found her!"

I whipped around to him, my eyes falling to figure slumped in the middle of the road, her hand reaching out for me shakily. "Blake!" I lunged forward, the yellow of my eyes fading out as I fell beside her, the gravel stones cutting through the skin of my knees.

Blake's eyes were open and staring, but they were also blackened, her nose crooked and blood pooled at the corners of her mouth. Her throat was cut, and she wasn't healing.

"It's okay," I whispered, slipping my arm under her waist and dragging her back into my lap, just like I'd done with Archie. "It's okay, I can do it this time."

Blake set her arm on mine, squeezing it softly, her heartbeat growing painfully slow as she gasped for air.

I started up the whirling, my eyes flashing yellow again, the sides clouding over, and the golden thread flew through the air... but it couldn't find her. It went for Isaac, and then, it tried to go to Chris, but it refused to go down to Blake.

Her hand on my arm tightened, her nails digging into my muscles, deep enough for trails of blood to drip down my arm.

"I— I can't," I breathed out in disbelief as the tether line cut off, "I can't do it. Why can't I do it?"

"Could this have anything to do with it?" Isaac called out to me, crouching to pick up something from the ground and holding it between his fingers.

My eyes snapped up to it. It was claw, a werewolf claw. A werewolf had tried to kill her... it hadn't been the Argents, after all. The golden hue that remained from my tether snapped to red so swiftly I couldn't do anything to calm myself. I fixed my gaze onto Blake's eyes, fiery rage forcing through any traces of the grief that built up inside me. "Who did this? Who killed you?"

Blake's chin wobbled as she tried not to cry, trying not to show her fear as the realisation settled on her that she was dying.

I brought her up higher, hugging her against me, her blood seeping into my top as I tried to bite back any trace of the tears that threatened to spill. "I'm sorry,"

Blake's hand reached out to wrap around my back, accepting any comfort I could give her.

"I'll look after Aaron for you."
