"Mom?" I called out, knocking on her office door. I pushed it open after a moment of silence, huffing in annoyance when I discovered she wasn't inside her office either.
She was supposed to be home an hour ago, but she wasn't, and with the strange shadow monsters scouring around, I decided to look for her. Except she wasn't anywhere she was supposed to be, not at work, in her car, or with a friend.
I stepped inside the office, making towards her desk, a frown forming on my face as I caught sight of her phone on the desk. I reached for it, pressing a button on it, but it was out of charge, which explained why I wasn't able to reach her.
A short buzz sounded in my ears as the lamp on her desk flickered slightly, the room darkening a little bit.
I rushed around to tap the bulb, "No, no. We are staying in the light. No shadow monsters." I'd heard enough about what happened to Liam to decide I didn't want to go through any of that. I'd be staying in the light for as long as I could.
The bulb stopped flickering, the light returning to normal in the room and I sighed in relief, taking a step away from it before I turned on my heels, making my way back out of the classroom.
I hurried down the dimly lit corridors, looking through empty classrooms for any indication of where my mom could be. I kept my phone in my hand tightly just in case as I searched, but I didn't need it. I found someone before I had to call anyone.
I knocked on the classroom door, pushing it open, "Hey, sorry to disturb you, I'm looking for my mom, Ms. Martin. She's the school guidance counsellor. Do you know where she might be?"
The woman was stopped grading the papers on her desk, but she didn't look up, "Hello, Lydia."
I frowned in confusion, a swirl of discomfort shooting through my stomach, "How do you know my name?"
"Of course I know you, Lydia," the woman began to turn slowly, her eyes bright and sharp, "the wailing woman."
My heart dropped to my feet, and a wave of ice washed over me. I stumbled back from the doorway, my phone slipping from my hand as the door slammed closed. I could still see Jennifer Blake through the glass, though.
Jennifer got up, her face twisted and torn apart as her true face took the place of her human one. She began to walk towards the door, her eyes never leaving mine.
My brain screamed at me to move, and I forced my feet to take shaky steps down the corridor before I sped up towards the school exit. I glanced over my shoulder as I heard the sound of the classroom door open, and my heart stuttered.
Jennifer flit between the shadows, and her clawed hands reached out for me.
I slammed into the door, trying to open it, but it only rattled and remained closed. I banged my fists against it, whipping back around to try and find another way out.
Jennifer let out a loud screech, her hand wrapping around my throat and clenching around it as she backed me into the door. "The wailing woman!"
I clawed at her hands, terror rolling through me as my skin prickled. A pressure built up inside my lungs, trapping all the air in my lungs in one place like a bomb that waited to explode.
Jennifer's nails dug into my skin as she grew closer to me, "You'll be a great sacrifice."
The pressure burst, and I opened my mouth, panic blinding me as my eyes went black, a scream tearing out of my throat.
