"Oh, that is all kinds of wrong," I hissed, my stomach turning uncomfortably as I eyed the corpse tied to the tree, dried blood staining his clothes and the soil under him. "So much for a safe beacon of a town."

"I think I'm going to be sick," Paisley muttered weakly, grabbing my hand quickly and darting off across the running path. She stooped over harshly, bringing me down with her, and a gagging sound left her throat.

I frowned, digging my hand out of hers and patting her back, "You okay? Do you need some water?"

Paisley's hand shot up, grabbing the front of my shirt so I was forced to scramble to stay upright, my arms flailing for a second. "I am going to kill you."

"A statement in poor taste but sure," I heaved out, grabbing onto a thin tree to stop myself from falling, "why am I being killed?"

Paisley near growled, straightening in out swiftly with her hand still gripping my shirt, "I asked for one thing, one!"

"You're gonna have to be pretty specific here," I tilted my head back as her fistful of my clothes tightened and the fabric particles crackled in my ears, tearing apart. "What exactly did I do wrong?"

"You—" Paisley released my shirt and threw her arms up into the air, turning a small circle before she slammed into me, backing me against the tree entirely. Her voice was controlled and purposefully quiet, but her eyes tinged yellow. "I asked you not to wolf out."

My own annoyance began to grow. If there was anything I loathed more than anything, it was people trying to intimidate me. "I did not wolf out. It was controlled and intentional."

"It was dangerous," Paisley shoved my shoulder, her eyes narrowing as they darkened further, "and it was reckless. You know it too."

"We have a job to do," I grit out, moving my hand to her hip and pushing it back so she had to take a step away from me. I pushed off the tree, dusting off my shirt, "Try to remember we aren't actually here to be high school students."

"It's him, isn't it?"

I focused my attention off Paisley, trying to ground myself by diverting my focus to the beta wolves and their friend, some scrawny human creature. I could feel my claws in my palms, half out and half in, as I turned to look in the direction of the tree and the other students.

Paisley sighed heavily, moving to my side, "I didn't mean to lash out."

"It happens," I mumbled quietly, crossing my arms over my chest. I snapped my eyes to the end of the ridge where a number of police officers were running up the slope, pushing students out of the way.

"Hey, get out of the way! Get back!" The man with a sheriff's badge yelled out orders, "Get this area cordoned off before they trample every piece of evidence."

"Back up! Everyone back!" A female officer started pushing students back.

"Get these kids out of here!" The sheriff demanded again.

"We should go," Paisley murmured, "I left my phone in my bag, and I have a feeling Blake is going to want to know about this."

I hummed in agreement, trailing my eyes down the dead body one last time, the skin eerily waxy and pale, "Sure."

"Coach, can you give us a hand here?" The sheriff called down as students refused to leave the premises fast enough.

"You heard the man! Nothing to see here!" Finstock barked out, his heart lurching nervously despite his bravado,  "Probably just some homeless kid..."
