KOREY

"You did what?" Paisley half yelled and half gasped, her hand slapping over her mouth before she trailed it down her chin and gripped her neck. "Oh my God, Blake is going to kill us."
I dangled my leg back and forth off the side of the half-wall I was sat on top of, my back pressed into the wall. "Not if she doesn't know about it."
"She will know about it," Paisley snapped, "she knows about everything. I can't believe how reckless you're being, from the running to the nearly wolfing out when I tried to make you go up the stairs, now this— I mean, Jesus, Korey, you might as well just yell it at the top of your lungs at this point."
"Don't tempt me," I murmured, focusing on the soothing scratch of my over-sharpened pencil tracing lines onto a page in my notebook. I wasn't sure what I was drawing, but every time I remembered the antiseptic smell mixed with bleach, new lines formed on the page, twisting into some kind of faceless figure.
Paisley groaned loudly, dropping her hands to her backpack and clicking her teeth, "Fine, whatever, I'm not your keeper."
I hummed in acknowledgement, turning my pencil around to erase a small hole in my drawing's face, creating an open mouth.
She huffed one more time before jerking her head to the side, "Are you going to class? It's English and you like reading."
"It's on the third floor," I shot back swiftly.
"Yeah, so are like three of our other classes, and like four others are on the second floor," Paisley argued, "you can't seriously intend to skip every single one?"
"I like gym," I mumbled quietly, adding a few unintentional darker lines to my drawing as the lead of my pencil splintered, "and I like art."
"Okay?" Paisley frowned in confusion, "So?"
I dusted the back of my hand over the drawing, lowering my knee to set my notepad into my lap, "So, they're on the first floor and so, that's where you'll find me."
"What about chemistry?" Paisley scoffed, "You skipped that."
"He gave me detention," I countered, a small smile curling on my face, "Harris can suck my—"
"Okay then!" Paisley cut me off, walking backwards swiftly, her finger pointing out at me, "we're not done talking about this, by the way, I just have a lesson to get to."
I waved to her with my pencil, returning to my sketching and trying to continue something worth presenting to the art teacher, whose name I couldn't remember, who'd asked me to impress him. I figured seeing as I would be failing every other subject, I could spend all my time on the only one I really intended to enjoy while I was here.
It wasn't a defiance thing, and it wasn't because I was stupid either. If every class was on the ground floor, I'd try at the very least, but anywhere more than thirty centimetres off solid ground was not place I wanted to be.
"Korey!"
I hissed, my pencil sliding right across the neck of the strange lined figure I had been drawing.
Paisley slid down the bannister of the stairs, sprinting across the few paces between us, her cheeks flushed.
"What?" I barked, digging my fingers into the page and tearing it out of my notebook, "I thought you were going to English."
"I was," Paisley nodded, grabbing my wrist and pulling me down from the half-wall in one smooth motion, "until I saw Aiden running out of the classroom."
