"Alright," Scott nodded curtly, "the moon is coming up, we need to head out. Liam is with Derek. Chris, Allison, and the Calavera's are patrolling the town. The rest of us are waiting for a sign."
Heavy silence coated the living room we were all crowded in.
"I'm gonna say it," Stiles grit out, his arms tightly wrapped around himself, "I don't want to say it, but I have to say it. What happens if we don't get a sign?" He looked up, meeting our eyes, "What happens if we don't find her tonight?"
None of us wanted to think about that or accept it as a possibility. We couldn't. It was too horrible of a thought, too hopeless.
"Do not despair just yet," Peter's chirped far too happily, "you're making the air smell bad. Come on, Korey's the type of girl to rip heads off. You don't think she can make a big boom during the full moon under extreme duress?"
"Someone stuff his mouth with a sock," Stiles snapped before he turned sharply, "in fact, I'll do it!"
Peter held his hands up in mock surrender, "Oh, no, a sock."
"Just shut up," Malia groaned, "we're trying to do something important here. Our friend needs us."
"I'm here too," Peter protested, "I came to help."
"Actually, Derek threatened to kick you out if you didn't make yourself useful," Lydia corrected him calmly, studying her nails.
Peter bristled, his eyes sharpening, "Contrary to popular beliefs, I have morals, and my morals include trying to help an innocent kid."
"That is news," Lydia murmured, dropping her hands to her sides, "twenty minutes to go. Time to head out."
My mouth was so dry, I felt as though I hadn't had a sip of water in over a year. All the waiting, the searching, and the desperation had led up to this. There wouldn't be a second chance... it wasn't likely, at least.
"If you smell anything," Scott began, "no matter how faint or how fleeting, you share it with the pack. We have roughly eight hours to do this, so no door left unopened, no leaf left unturned." He turned to me, his face stern but determined, "We're going to find her."
I acknowledged his words with a short nod of my heads, not trusting my voice to hold before I turned to the small pile on the living room table. I stepped towards it, picking up Korey's teddy bear before I moved back again.
The others followed my lead, picking through the rest of Korey's belongings, each one of us preparing to breathe in her familiar scent and track it. The air buzzed with a sudden hope and hints of confidence as eyes flashed gold and weapons were drawn.
This time, we were going to find her. We had to. This time, the search wouldn't fail, and Korey would be coming home.
The moon rose, shining through the windows, and the shift began.
