"Look, I trust that you won't try and kill him the second you see him—"

"Why?" I sputtered, confusion clouding my face, "I absolutely will try and kill him the second I see him."

Scott sighed heavily before nodding slowly, "Thank you for your honesty."

"No problem," I shrugged, turning my phone over on my knee again, the screen lighting up my face, "Hey, Allison?"

"Yeah?" The huntress called back to me, driving down the road towards the Beacon Hills Preserve.

"Do you mind pulling over?" I switched my screen off, "If I'm meant to keep a distance from Deucalion until Scott says otherwise, I'd like to preoccupy myself with other things."

"Like?" Isaac jerked his face to me, suspicion flashing across his face.

"Stop being so obsessed with me, Mariah," I rolled my eyes, my hand grabbing the car handle as soon as Allison slowed down on the side of the road. "Keep me updated on how things go."

"Will you be at the distillery?" Scott rotated in his seat as I opened the car door.

"That was kind of the whole point of me coming along in the first place," I slammed the door closed, lingering as Scott opened his window. "I promise I'll be there. There's just something I need to do first."

"Alright," Scott agreed, "be careful. It's a lunar eclipse tonight."

My brows furrowed in surprised before I shook my head to brush his concern away, "Yeah, whatever. I'll see you when the fighting kicks off." I backed away from the car, walking backwards across the road until Allison drove off. Then, I lid down the muddy ridge, my eyes flashing yellow as I looked through the dark trees. "Pais?"

A rumble of thunder coursed through the sky, ivory lightning bolts cutting through thick, ebony clouds. The world turned to day for a split second before it was plunged back into darkness, but it was enough for me to see the figure leaning against the tree.

"You know, most people acknowledge their names when they're called," a touch of a smile ghosted over my lips as I shuffled towards Paisley.

"Yeah, well," Paisley shrugged, pushing off the tree, "I'm doing this new thing called 'refusing to conform to the norm', it's very in right now. Something about Marxists and capitalism."

I snorted, joining her side as we walked through the forest, "You and your history facts."

"History is important," Paisley stared straight ahead, "it teaches you all the mistakes you shouldn't repeat."

Goosebumps prickled my skin as my shoulders tensed, "I'm assuming you're aware of the mistakes we shouldn't make tonight?"

Paisley nodded curtly, "Yeah. I thought about our original plan to confront Mason head on, and I decided it won't work."

"I'm all ears," I stuffed my hands into my pockets, "tell me what to do."

Paisley reached her hand out to stop me, turning to face me fully, "We're gonna play a game, Kore."

"Dude, I love Uno," I blurted randomly, "let's do it."

Paisley finally cracked a hesitant smile, "I don't know if it'll be anything like Uno, but... I want Mason to think we're on his side."

I frowned in confusion, tilting my head to the side, "I'm not sure I understand, but I'm still on board."

"He's going to be with Deucalion and Scott at the distillery, right?" Paisley asked, and I nodded in confirmation, "Okay, well, the evil darach lady is going to be there too. She's strong, and we're about to get a heck of a lot weaker."
