KOREY

"Hey, Isaac!" I yelled loudly, pushing the McCall house door open, a plate in my hand. "Allison baked you cookies! They taste like egg shells and salt but if you don't eat them all and tell her they were amazing, I'm going to tell everyone at school about the time I caught you posing in the bathro—"

"Korey!" Isaac blurted out, rising up from an armchair in the living room, his eyes wide.

My eyes snapped to the man standing beside him, "Ah, shit. Way to ruin someone's day."

Rafael stared at me unimpressed, his hands in his pockets, "Can I help you?"

"No," I rolled my eyes, walking forward and setting the plate of cookies down on the coffee table. "Does Melissa know he's here?" I directed my question at Isaac, "Does Scott?"

"No and no," the werewolf mumbled, his voice dropping into a nervous mumble as he sat back down, rubbing his hands together.

"Aren't you both supposed to be at school?" Rafael looked between Isaac and I.

"Isaac isn't well," I shrugged, moving to set my hand on the werewolf's shoulder, "and I am none of your business." An idea suddenly struck my head, a touch of Blake's teaching coming through, "You know it's illegal to interrogate a minor without a parent or guardian present, right?"

"Is there a reason I should be interrogating Isaac?" Rafael raised a brow before turning the the boy in question, "Do you feel interrogated?"

"Very much so," Isaac scrunched up his face, "I just wanted to go back to bed."

The weight of the annoyance in my stomach grew as I glared at Rafael and stooped down to grab Isaac's hand, "We're going upstairs."

"We are?" Isaac mumbled, standing up as I pulled on his hand.

"Perhaps I can convince you to stay," Rafael quipped, "considering something very interesting came up on the background check I ran on you."

My blood stilled in my veins, and I sucked in a sharp breath. I knew exactly what was in those files, I knew exactly why they were strange, and I knew exactly why Isaac couldn't hear a thing.

Isaac glanced down at me, his eyes betraying his concern as he glanced down at our intertwined hands where I'd accidentally squeezed his tightly. "Korey?"

"Miss Dawson, would you care to explain why in 2010, according to your medical records, you were declared decea—"

The front door opened again, and three figures gracelessly fell into the house.

I let out the breath I was holding, wrenching my hand out of Isaac's and wrapping my arms around myself as my heart hammered in my ears like a daunting warning.

"What are you doing here?" Scott blurted in shock, staring at his dad.

I stepped to the side, tensing slightly as Isaac immediately followed, his eyes burning into the side of my face.

"I could ask you the same thing," Rafael shot back easily.

"Free period," Stiles blurted, somewhat recovered, but his face still pale, "We're doing group study."

Rafael didn't appear convinced, but he let it go, his eyes moving the the girl sandwiched between Scott and Stiles. "Who's she?"

Stiles spluttered awkwardly, his arm rising up and going around the girl's shoulders, "She's my girlfriend..."
