Her blood seeped through my shirt as I tried to stop the wound from gushing, but it didn't work. She wouldn't heal no matter how much of her pain I took, no matter how desperately I pleaded.
"Isaac," Allison choked out, her hand reaching out shakily between repressed gasps, "Isaac, she's... she's gone." Her hand landed on mine, squeezing it firmly before she tried to move it.
I jerked her hand off me, shuffling my grip on Korey so I could lay her down in my lap instead, pressing down over the wound again.
Korey was still warm, a ghost of a smile still stuck on her face but her eyes, that were usually full of amusement, shining brightly with swirls of vivid forest green and deep, chocolate brown, dashed with sprinkles of stardust... they were empty.
I bit back the cry that threatened to rip through my throat, my arm tightening around her shoulders as I shook my head.
She had been healing after everything, opening up slowly, learning how to trust again... she had promised to tell me everything, whatever that everything was. She'd been so afraid of showing all of us every part of her, she shielded it so well, but she was getting there... she was almost there.
"Allison!" Chris's voice burst through the camp, panicked and laced with terror, "Allison!"
"Dad!" Allison stumbled to her feet, tears freely streaming down her face as she held her hands out, running towards him.
"Thank God," Chris breathed out, grabbing her to him, holding her tightly against him, "I told you to wait, I told you to—"
"Dad," Allison cried out again, her voice shaking as she spoke, breaking at last as she whispered, "Korey..."
Chris's heart dropped, and he carefully detangled himself from Allison, taking a slight step away from her, his eyes on my back. "Isaac..."
I swallowed the lump in my throat, bending my head to press my forehead against the side of Korey's face, "Come on, Kore... wake up."
Her scent was still strong, in equal parts sweet and savoury, a perfect blend of blackberries and smoke, intoxicating.
I brushed my lips over her forehead, squeezing her tightly against me, my hand burying into her hair, pressing her face into my shoulder before I leaned down, setting her on the ground.
"No," Chris muttered softly, as he took a hesitant step closer, "no."
A figure burst out through one of the archways of the camp, his heart pounding and frantic as his feet slipped before he scrambled back up, his eyes glowing red. "Korey!"
Pure, blinding fury gripped at every cell in my body, my claws growing as I forced myself to my feet, red clouding my eyes as I stepped towards Scott. "Where were you?!"
Scott faltered, his wide eyes turning away from Korey's body to me, "Isa—"
I started towards him, shoving him back harshly, "Where were you?!"
Scott grabbed at my arms, trying to push me back, "Isaac!"
A growl forced its way out of my throat as I freed my arms from him before slamming his shoulders back again. "She needed you! She needed her alpha!" I seethed, my voice growing deeper with my anger, "She needed someone to make her stronger! She needed someone to force her to heal! Where were you?!"
"Hey!" Arms came up under my armpits, locking behind my neck and forcing me away from Scott, "Come on, Isaac, now isn't the time to be fighting with one another."
