DRIP

DRIP

SWWWEEESSSHHH

The machine finally called it quits, as the hot liquid stopped dripping down and the cup stood alone in the darkness of the room. Silence permeated every inch of the store, except for the occasional noise from shoes in the back.

The ex-SWAT officer was as still as stone! Her shirt drenched, her mouth dry. Perspiration caused by nervousness and anxiety came down in droplets down Chris' spine and neck. She had been trying to calm herself for the past ten minutes, feeling as if the time had tripled. The moment felt endless, her joints beginning to get sore because of the lack of movement and her heart pounding harder and faster.

It was getting extremely uncomfortable under the cloth, and she had no idea what was going on beyond the counter that protected her from the armed perpetrators. Not only was her body in a pinch, but her mind couldn't bare the torture anymore.

THUMP THUMP

"Alright. All done!" called a voice from the back, as rapid steps were heard approaching.

We all know curiosity killed the cat, so... Chris couldn't help but to check out what was going on. It was too intense and she felt she was left out in the dark. Literally!

"You sure? You got everything?" the first officer asked, skeptically.

"Boss, relax! It's not our first rodeo!" the man snapped, annoyed.

She heard that last remark and knew she had to move. If this wasn't the first time these guys pulled something like this, then they would certainly be furious to find out somebody was spying on them. Without a weapon, backup or anything to back her play, she was stranded all alone.

With a heavy heart, she looked down at her pocket, where her phone was tucked away. No vibrating announcement. Nothing. She had sent Street two messages already. Nothing. She tried Hondo, Tan, Luca, Deacon...nothing! Nobody responded! She was freaking out! She missed her team!

But...she couldn't give up just yet. With the slightest movement, she was able to remove the mobile and place it close enough to her face. Just when she was about to send another text she realized her phone was out of range. What? That meant that all the ones previous to that were backlogged until she got a signal. Oh dear!

Deep breath. She had to calm down if she was going to survive.

"If you see someone, shoot 'em." The words repeated over and over in her mind, on automatic replay. She had to be careful, she couldn't make a sound. So, with somewhat trembling hands, she carefully slid the cloth to the side, revealing a very concerned look. Breathing slowly, moving steady, she slid her body closest to the wall as possible, away from the counter that had acted as her shield and hideaway.

SLAM

The sudden loud sound of the back door startled her, making her jolt slightly up. She gathered herself as quickly as she could, but the movement caused her arm to slip and impact a tower of plastic cups, which had fallen from their original place.
