*** Shanthi ***
KNOCK KNOCK
I immediately went and opened the door to find Vinod who looked extremely tired and tanned, as if he spent the entire day doing exhaustive labor.
"Greetings, my dear Shanthi," he greeted as he walked past me and went to take down his weapons, respectfully arranging them on the table one after the other.
"You look exhausted," I said, worried.
"I am exhausted," he corrected, "I ran 25 times all around the crown's home in the scorching sun."
"25 times!" I exclaimed.
It takes 2 hours for me to even walk that distance and Vinod ran all that distance, that too 25 times!
"Mmm hmm," he nodded, "There are 25 more left. Pritham and I will finish it next week."
"Why would you both do that?" I asked, surprised.
"Oh it wasn't a choice," he said, now arranging his weapons on the wall to display, "We were punished,by the general."
"What?" I asked surprised, "How can general sir be soo heartle-"
I paused my sentence when Vinod's sudden angry glare at me challenged me to continue.
I blinked my eyes in fear. He wasn't this offended even when I doubted his character.
"Not a word against my general," he warned.
"But...Vi-" I paused and corrected, "Officer...I...I...was taking your side. My concern was for you!"
"Oh right," his expression quickly softened as he got back to arrange his swords, "still don't say anything against my general. He is an amazing man who refers to his soldiers as his favorite people. What happened wasn't his fault, it was ours."
"What did you do?" I asked curious.
"There are 7 levels of skills in sword fighting," he explained, "and if we pass level 7, we get to add the title of 'Veer' behind our names. Pritham and I are really desperate to get that title and in the process tried to practice using real swords which we weren't supposed to do. The complicated moves could very much easily get us injured or worse killed. We were caught and even then he did not punish us, but me being me, suggested we do it everyday and that is when hell broke loose."
I remained silent as I tried to process everything!
How dare he risk his life? What the hell was he thinking?
