*** Yashoda ***
I followed the general as he took me to one of the stables.
"General sir, why are we here?" I asked looking around.
"For Guddu," he replied and whistled. The moment he did a big black horse came gallopping outside and I immediately held onto the general's shoulder out of fear.
"Sorry," I said and let go when he turned his attention to my hands grasping onto his shirt.
"Relax Yashu, that's my horse. It won't hurt you," he assured.
"Why do we need a horse?" I asked confused.
"Because where I am about to take you is quite far from here," he replied.
I am wearing a saree general sir!!!!
How can I get on that horse?
"I...I can walk," I tried to suggest alternatives.
"I don't want you to walk," he immediately replied, "Like I said, it's far."
I looked at the horse and then at him.
"Are you scared you will fall?" he asked.
I nodded hoping that would make him change his mind.
"Come forward," he said and held my hand taking me a step closer.
"All you need to do is to put your right leg here," he said pointing to a raising attached to the side of the horse, "Raise up and put your left leg on the other end."
I looked at him blankly.
"I will hold your hand all the way and I will never let you fall Yashu, trust me," he assured.
That's the sweetest thing a man could say and I almost involuntarily smiled but immediately went back to a neutral expression and shook my head.
"I can't," I whispered.
"Why not?" he said sounding a little frustrated, "You don't trust me?"
"I do," I replied but did not elaborate further.
"Yashu, you are making me lose my patience," he signed, "If there is anything, you need to tell me. I cannot......"
"I am wearing a saree," I replied cutting him off.
"So?" he asked confused.
Does he really not know?
"The...." I hesitated, "the fabric goes up if I sit with my legs on either side. It is neither a pleasant feeling, nor a pleasant look."
I expected him to get awkward. I expected myself to get awkward but to my surprise he acted as if I am his soldier and he is performing crisis management with me.
"Noted," he replied, "Can you think of any alternatives to fix it?"
"I...." I thought for a while and he patiently waited encouraging me to think, "I could drape it in a different way to make it work."
