"Baje baje aa dholu baje 🎶"

The music roared on as I spun in rhythm, eyes scanning the crowd in the middle of my dance—searching for the King. But he was nowhere to be seen.

Panic gripped me. Had he run away again?

I tapped the Snake on the shoulder—he was dancing right beside me.

"Where is Madhav?" I asked.

He looked around, as bewildered as I was.

"Where did he go?" he muttered under his breath.

"God forbid he wandered off again," I said. "Let me go alert—"

But the Snake caught my hand, stopping me.

"Let's not make it more complicated than it has to be," he said. "Madhav really likes nature... and rivers. Go to the east side, check near the Kaveri. I'll look inside the temple."

"Fine," I nodded. "Take care of Yashu."

He gave a quick nod, and I darted out of the temple courtyard—just in time to spot Yashoda's parents and Pritham making their way in.

"Have you seen Madhav?" I asked them.

"We're going to see him," Yashoda's father replied, gesturing toward the temple.

"Mama garu, I think he meant—" Pritham began to explain.

"I meant Deva," I cut in.

"He is a Deva," Yashoda's father insisted, utterly missing the point.

"What the he—" I bit my tongue, reining in the frustration that surged in my chest. They flinched, and I instantly remembered who I was talking to.

"Have a lovely time at the temple, noble sir," I said, forcing a smile as I stepped aside.

"Sir... do you want me to follow you?" Pritham asked quietly.

"No," I said, "Just make sure Yashu and the Snake reach home safe."

And with that, I turned and broke into a run—toward the river.

"I apologize for the inappropriate touch, miss," I said, stepping back after helping her to her feet.

She gave a faint nod and quickly turned, trying to walk away—but I stepped aside to block her path gently.

"I... I need to leave," she whispered, her divine voice barely audible, eyes lowered, refusing to meet mine.

"And I need to understand why you tried to drown me," I said, lowering my head ever so slightly to catch her gaze. "Perhaps... if your lips could lend voice to your heart, we may both find what we seek."

She lifted her eyes slowly and looked at me.

"I mistook you for someone else," she murmured, already trying to step past me again.

I blocked her path once more.

"I've answered your question," she said, a hint of frustration rising.

"And it's only led to more," I replied calmly. "Why would you wish to throw anyone into the river?"
