*** Vinod ***
"Are you okay, Shanthi?" the general gently asked as he noticed the worried look on my wife's face.
"Brother we are dooom-" I was about to say outloud but was interrupted when Pritham firmly held my hand. I looked at him and he placed his finger on his lips asking me to shut the hell up.
Right...right....Randheera sir can hear us!
Why do I keep forgetting all the time!
The general looked at us and then back at Shanthi.
"Were you running from them?" he asked.
Shanthi remained silent and simply looked at him nervously.
The general looked at me, perhaps trying to decode my expression and then at Pritham before finally looking at the blood stained cloth in his hand, which immediately changed his expression from confused, to understanding to angry.
He then looked at Shanthi once again who was almost shivering with fear at this point.
"Shanthi, tangachi (little sister)," he said as his eyes softened, "Why don't you go home, relax and do something you love? Your husband is more than capable of answering on your behalf."
(Shoutout to my Tamil flatmate who calls me Tangachi and melts my heart every single time)
"Right, Vinod?" he asked looking at me.
No sir, not right!
I am yet to be investigated and punished for my insensitive comment earlier and now am caught red-handed for breaking the rules and getting harsh with the criminals....not to mention your eyes are signalling my death....perhaps this is a good time to shave my head, go bald, change my identity and run away to the North.
I looked at the general as he waited for my response and slowly nodded.
"Go home sweetheart," I said outloud.
The general stepped aside and signalled Shanthi to leave. She nervously looked at me for one last time before slowly walking away.
"Come to my chambers, we need to talk," the general said looking at me once Shanthi left and my heart skipped a beat.
I looked at Pritham and both Pritham and I took a step forward.
"No, not together," the general interrupted, "One after the other. Vinod come, Pritham stay."
Ah well, time to prepare my death bed!
Gods of hell, have mercy!
*** That night ***
*** Yashoda ***
I was sitting in the hall knitting a Kurtha for my husband when I heard the doors open and I immediately put the cloth behind my back.
"What are you hiding?" the general asked as he stepped in.
"No-nothing," I stuttered.
"Of course," the general said sarcastically, "It's not like you put your hands behind your back the moment you heard the doors open."
"Can we...can we pretend that you did not see it?" I asked.
"No we cannot," he replied sternly and I remained silent.
