It was still the same.
That's the only sentence, Miraal could think of as she stepped foot into the orphanage after such a long time. She took a deep breath and the fresh air combined with the glorious smell of various flowers and plants wafted into her nostrils. The orphanage wasn't much of a magnificence. But it was big enough to hold bedrooms, and few classrooms for the children.
They studied, ate and play here together. They do get adopted by people but that's so rare. People usually don't come here to adopt them. They just came to give a hefty donation so that their name could be reputated in the higher society. Almirah accompanied Miraal. She used to come here whenever she wanted to free her mind.
Those young souls worked like a magic in vanishing of all Almirah's distress and worries. She loves to spend time with these children. They're like her family too. She faced Miraal who was busy gazing at the architecture of the place.
"I'm going to meet the headmistress. You can take a stroll around here."
Miraal nodded her head before her mother walked away and soon disappeared from her sight. She looked down to see Faris standing beside her. He was holding her hand. But she noticed something else. There was a look of fear on his face. His grip on her hand was also tight. It made her suspicious so she crouched down at his level.
His eyes connected with hers before she asked him
"What's wrong?"
Faris doesn't say anything for a while. She waited patiently. But when she realized that he wasn't going to reply, she probe
"Faris, c'mon. Tell me, what happened?"
He finally gulped before asking her in a timid voice
"Are you going to leave me here?"
The moment the question left his mouth, Miraal mind clicked. He was acting strange because he thought she was going to leave him here. That's why, he was clutching her hands so tightly while sitting in the car. Miraal felt her heart constricted. So, she cupped his cheeks before assuring him
"No, never. I'm not going to leave you here ever."
Her words of assurance did little to calm the young boy. So, she stood up before grabbing his hand and tightening her hold on it
"C'mon, let's take a walk round the Orphange."
He nodded before walking with her. They started to roam around different pathways. There were children everywhere. Some were playing while some were just sitting on the grass enjoying the nice sunny afternoon. While some were busy talking to each other. The atmosphere was so lively that a smile automatically appeared on Miraal's lips.
Those kids were faced by the cruelty of fate at such a young age. Yet still their smiles never wavered. They're still those innocents souls who wants to explore the world. When Miraal saw a bunch of children playing football, she turned towards Faris before telling him
"Why don't you go and play with them?'
He looked up at her confused.
"They'll let me play with them?"
His innocent question put a smile on her face.
"Of course, they would. They would love to make a new friend."
He nodded his head but still looked a little reluctant. So, she assured him yet again
"I'm not going anywhere. I promise. I'm gonna sit right there so that you can see me."
