You were a science officer on the Discovery, working closely with Commander Stamets. You were quite close to him and he was one of your best friends. You enjoyed his input on topics and whatever you talked about during your breaks. It was a good friendship and you enjoyed it thoroughly.

You didn't know when you started to have feelings for Saru. It started slowly at first. Like with a smile when you saw him; a blush whenever he complimented you. Then your heartbeat would speed up at the sight of him and you daydreamed about the two of you.

It scared you at first. Saru was not only a different race than you but he was your commanding officer. He could never be attracted to you. You were quite plain and you never thought you were his type. But that all changed one night.

There was a party one night and you had gotten a little drunk. You spent awhile talking with Tilly and Michael, laughing the night away while getting to know them better. Michael and Tilly were some of your closest friends. Stamets was almost among your closest friends, of course. Eventually, you migrated over to where Stamets was standing to spend time with him as well.

As the night went on, you would glance over in Saru's direction, trying not to make it obvious. He loomed over the others around him as he talked with them. Something about his bright blue eyes made your heart swell with the feelings you had for him.

Stamets bumped your side with his elbow, nodding in Saru's direction. "Why don't you go and talk to him?"

You gasped, looking at Stamets with an offended looking on your face. "I could never! He doesn't feel the same way as me. I don't want to expose myself like that to someone who could never like me back."

Dr. Culber joined the conversation. "You'd be surprised, y/n. Just get gain some confidence and go ask him on a date."

You rolled your eyes. "You two are crazy. Why are you trying to play matchmaker anyways?"

Stamets pushed you in Saru's direction. "Because he likes you too. Now grow a pair and ask him out."

Deciding they were both crazy, you downed a few more shots before deciding to head back to your quarters. You were stumbling and bumping into the walls on the way there. As you stumbled again, a pair of hands caught you before you tripped. You turned to see Saru there, staring into your eyes as he steadied you.

You hiccupped. "Well, it's a pleasure to see you, Mr. Saru. Thank you for the help."

"Dr. Culber suggested that you might need help on your way back," Saru answered. "I decided to come find you and help. You did have quite a lot of drinks."

You snorted. "Of course, he told you to come find me. Since you're here then, let's go to my quarters."

Saru took your arm. "What do you mean that he told me to find you?"

The drinks were getting to you and all caution went out the window. "He was telling me that I need to confess my feelings and I told him to leave it alone. That nothing was going to happen anyways. But now you're here."

"Confess your feelings for who?" Saru asked as you got to the doors of your quarters.

You turned to look up at him. "For you. I like you, Mr. Saru, and I have for a long time. I just haven't said anything."

Saru looked a bit taken aback and took a second to respond. "Well, that was unexpected. I was going to confess the same too but looks like you beat me to it."

"So they were right when they said you liked me too?" You asked.

"Yes," Saru said. "Would you like to join me on a date soon?"

You smiled. "Yes, I would like that very much. Thank you for walking me back."

Saru nodded, a little smile on his face. "Anytime, y/n. I will see you soon."

"See you soon, Mr. Saru."
