You were one of Chakotay's ragtag group of misfits that got snatched from your home quadrant and sent unwillingly to another one. Chakotay and you were good friends and had spent many years together. It was an amazing and deeply rooted friendship that not a lot could break. Not even the hardest of missions.
When the Voyager crew and your crew merged, you were spared and sent to engineering. It was a good and easy job as you were good with anything even remotely related to engineering. You were even one of the running candidates for chief engineer but wasn't picked.
Even though Chakotay was a commander and you were far below him, you still remained deeply connected friends. You were even attracted to him but could never admit anything. He was out of your league and could never love you in return.
On one of your days off, you were hanging out in the Doctor's office. You and Doc were beginning to become close and he was actually a really good source to talk to about anything. Despite his constant complaining about how he was a doctor, not a therapist, you still went to talk to him about anything that bothered you. That day was the day you admitted you were attracted to Chakotay.
You jumped onto one of the exam tables near Doc's desk, laying back. "Hey, I'm going to tell you something and you have to swear not to tell anyone and I mean anyone."
The Doctor was going through medical supplies at his desk. "Why would I tell anyone any of your personal drama?"
"Good, thanks," you said. "There's a guy I know that I've known for years. We're really good friends and I like him romantically. But I can't tell him since we have such a close relationship. What do I do? What would you suggest I do?"
"You could admit your feelings and see what happens," Doc replied. When you glared at him, he continued, "I believe it's the best option. You've mentioned several times that he's a good man and that you're close. How do you know it won't end well?"
You signed. "I guess but I don't know. I don't want to ruin what's already good."
"It could get better if you say something," Doc pointed out. "Who is this mystery man anyways?"
You covered your hands with your hands, mumbling, "It's Chakotay."
"Come again?"
"Chakotay! It's Chakotay!"
"The commander? That's a bit surprising though not in a bad way," Doc said, coming to your side. "He's a good man! You should ask him out."
"But he's out of my league!" You exclaimed.
Doc rested a hand on your shoulder. "I don't believe that. Do it or else!"
You narrowed your eyes at him. "Your bedside manner is getting better but your convincing abilities are abysmal."
Doc got a serious look on his face. "You're a wonderful woman and I know Chakotay is a good man. He will like you the way you like him. Ask him out."
You sighed, sitting up. "I'll think about how I'll do it."
"That's a good attitude, y/n," Doc said. "Keep me updated."
You left the medbay, your head down. You weren't watching where you were going and bumped into someone. They caught you before you fell and when you looked up, it was Chakotay.
"Are you okay, y/n?" Chakotay asked.
You nodded, getting a serge of confidence. "Yeah, I'm fine. I know this may be weird but do you want to go out for dinner one night?"
Chakotay smiled a little, squeezing your arms a little. "Yeah, I do. Let's go plan it out privately."
Chakotay moved your arm to be tucked into his elbow as you started walking the halls. The two of you talked as you walked, enjoying each other's company. It felt like a weight was lifted off your chest. You finally going out with the man you had loved for years and it felt great. Things were finally working out between the two of you.
