Blood. It smelled blood.
Eat.
Smashing through trees, the Beast hunted their scent, grunting and slobbering on all fours. Claws and feet pounded the dirt, faster, faster, shredding vines and branches, bounding over rocks until at last it could hear their breaths and see the trail of red. One of them was hurt.
Eat.Through a long, dark, hollow trunk it slunk, licking up the blood, smelling their terror. The Beast took its time, for they had nowhere to go, and soon it heard their whimpers. Bit by bit they came into view, silhouetted in moonlight, trapped between the end of the log and thick patch of briars. They came into view, they were three. The beast walked up to them as they cried. In front was a girl with h/c hair and e/c eyes, staring into the beast's soul. In the reflection, it saw in fact that it was no beast, it was Sophie.
Sophie flung up from bed and knocked into her bedside candle, splattering lavender wax all over the wall. She whirled to the mirror and saw herself bald, toothless, pockmarked with warts–
"Help–" she choked, closing her eyes–
She opened them and the witch was no longer there. Her beautiful face stared back at her. Panicked, Sophie checked her shivering white skin for warts, wiping away the cold film of sweat.I'm Good, she calmed herself when she found none. But her hands wouldn't stop shaking, her mind racing, unable to shake that Beast, the Beast she'd killed in a world far away, the Beast that still haunted her dreams. She thought of her rage in the graveyard... Y/n's petrified face...
You'll never be Good, the School Master had warned. He called them equal in soul. Sophie's mouth went dry. She'd smile at the wedding. She'd work at Bartleby's. She'd eat the widow's food and buy toys for her sons. She'd be happy here, just like Y/n and Agatha. Anything not to be a witch again.
"I'm Good," she repeated into silence.
The School Master had to be wrong. She'd saved both Y/n and indirectly Agatha's life, and Y/n saved hers. They were home all together. The riddle solved. The School Master Dead. The storybook closed.
Definitely Good, Sophie assured herself, snuggling back into her pillow. But she could still taste blood.

Y/n sat in her windowsill, watching the outside. The fog and wind from the night faded away, turning into a late February morning, showing the signs of the spring that was about to come. Still the sun shone so brightly for February that the day seemed blessed for love. In Gavaldon, weddings were a public event, but this one was the biggest in a while. Even shops closed down this time, for Stefan was a popular man.
Y/n, for the first time in a while, was back in her working clothes, feeling that they were pretty appropriate for a wedding. Still she felt sad at such an event. She was with the girl her heart loved most, and she did love Sophie too, but still she felt something missing. Something in her heart was aching, aching for someone, almost to a point it felt sickening.
Sometimes, she told herself that she could just walk out into the woods. She wasn't stupid after all, she had figured something out. If the School Master could trick her out into the Woods, it meant she was always capable of doing so. Because she was from the woods, she would be able to enter it. But she would have no idea where to go, nor did she want to leave Agatha and Sophie. Perhaps she could take them with her, she did figure that as long as you had an equal amount of evil and good souls from Gavaldon leaving together, they would enter the woods, who would still be in balance. But did the School Master do anything else for that to be possible? She didn't know. And she didn't want to abandon her friends.
