Two kings, ordered to kill her.
That's what the pearl had unleashed.
A victory she thought she'd claimed for her prince.
Instead, a death sentence. For her.
But before the pearl had spoken to the boys, it had spoken to her first. Maybe that should have been her indication that even if she kissed Tedros, forcing him to swallow the pearl, it was already too late.

She'd hurled into the night without thinking, streaking past friends and foe hunting an answer and taking it for herself. The cold glass caught on her tongue and she almost swallowed it, but blocked its way with her tongue. There was this feeling too it, this spark, a buzz. It had felt like when she used to hold her wizard wish years past. And there were these vapors that surged to the roof of her mouth, through her nostrils, and behind her eyes.

Looking inwards, she watched it take shape, this silvery mist, congealing into a ghost...
The Snake, on his green mask and suit of scims.
Only then he wasn't the Snake anymore. His muscles swelled, his mask shedding, and Y/n was faced with a stranger. But she had a guess as to who this might be. The one the wizard tree spoke of. The Green Knight.
Then he became the Snake again.
Back and forth, the phantoms went, Snake, Knight, Snake, Knight, faster, faster, until they morphed into a third ghost—
Evelyn Sader.
Smiling at Y/n.
As if Evelyn, whose soul was in the dress she couldn't get off, was the link between the Snake and Knight.
A hidden secret for the winner to find.

She was so horrified that she was brought out of her own head and into reality, met with Tedros' face. She quickly kissed him, transferring the pearl from her mouth to his.
But the mist inside her head had changed again... now the ghost of Arthur, the Lion if Camelot, her true love's father, glowering at Y/n— she, the winner, despite her best attempts; she, a mistake— the once-king rearing high inside her like a dragon..

Then she breathed him out like fire.

When Y/n woke up, she was in her old room at school.

It hadn't changed a bit, Purity 51, except that her bed and the one who used to be Agatha's were pushed together. She laid in the middle of both, and she already knew which four had done it. But everything was as if she'd gone back in time: the lone mirror on her side of the room... murals flaunting princess kissing princes... a fresco of clouds across the ceiling with cupids shooting love arrows (even the loose tile was still there). Over the beds were white silken canopy shaped like royal carriages, and at the end of the two mattresses was a glass tray with milk-soaked oats, two hard boiled eggs, and chopped banana dusted with sugar. There were a scruffy note on the tray, and then a card propped up against the tray. The card was in Hort's messy handwriting, and Y/n could barely read what it said. The other card was Sophie's, which said:

Since Hort had such awful writing skills, I decided to write a note too. Eat, you'll need the energy. Go down to the clearing, after you've eaten.
Love you, darling!
-xoxo Sophie.

Y/n glanced across the room, seeing her cat basking in the sun against one of the windows. She noticed the bed still felt very warm. On her desk was a bowl of uneaten cucumber salad, in the corner laid a pair of new frog pajamas, Agatha's cloak was hung in the wardrobe, and there was a discarded, bloody stake laying on her dresser. On the floor was a book open on the bed table: Black Magic Healing, Level 2, spread to a page about repairing broken limbs—

She threw aside the sheets, revealing her right leg, shattered badly only a few hours ago.
No longer.
She stood, gently putting weight on it.
Aside from a dull ache within the bone, the leg seemed healed. They were still covered in burns however, but who knew when that would heal, if ever. The red stains might be there until her death. She caressed the scar under her eye, the first stain on her body. The first sign of the battles she'd gone through just to get here. And still there was more she had to fight. At this point, she wondered if all of this would ever be over.
