Y/n was taken into the crowd, the youngest elder holding the rope that connected to her tied arms. Up on the stage, Agatha and Tedros were already tied up against the pyre, the Elder with the longest beard up on the stage by them. Beside her was Callis, gripped by the middle Elder.

"I'm afraid we only have room for two on the pyre," said the Elder with the longest beard, grinning at Agatha and Tedros as he paced the stage, top hat in hand. He leered down at Callis and Y/n. "We'll let mother watch before her turn," he mused as the middle Elder who held Callis dragged her into the mob. "And afterwards, we'll have a beautiful wedding ceremony." Y/n felt herself pulled closer to the youngest Elder. Still she was forced to watch in the front of the crowd.

She spotted Reaper's shadow sprinting away from Callis and towards Graves Hill, a scrap of what looked like parchment between his teeth. Then her eyes drifted back to Agatha and Tedros, wrestling hopelessly against their binds, sweating from the torches above them.

If Agatha's mother had entered the house just a second later, she, Agatha and Tedros would have had their magic back– they'd be far into the Woods by now, Callis no longer in danger. Y/n held in her tears, trying her best to get out of her own binds, but to no use. They'd called Agatha a witch from the day she was born, destined to burn at the stake, Y/n had always tried to defend Agatha, but it seemed she had failed in that job.

"But we are not savages, of course," said the Elder, turning to the captives. "Justice is only delivered when there is a crime."
The crowd buzzed impatiently, eager to see the show and wedding and get to bed.
"Let us meet our guest from the Woods," the Elder proclaimed. His shiny eyes flickered to Tedros. "What is your name, boy?"
A guard ripped out Tedros' gag. "Touch her and I'll kill you," the prince lashed, pointing with his head towards Y/n.

The Elder raised his brow. "Ah, I see," he said, peering down at Y/n. "For two hundred years, those from the Woods have been kidnapped our young, ripped apart our families, and attacked our homes. For two hundred years, those from the Woods have brought our children nothing but terror, pain, and suffering. And here you are, the first to ever stand before us, claiming to protect one? An improbable twist..." He studied the way Tedros looked at Y/n, his tone easing. "But if it's true, perhaps mercy is in the cars after all. Only the hardest of hearts can resist young love."

The crowd rumbled, as if they'd cast their own hearts in stone to see vengeance for all the curses of the Woods. But as Y/n searched the Elder's face, the old man's smile was almost friendly now.
"You'll let us live?" Tedros insisted.
Y/n's heart hammered, praying her prince had just saved his and Agatha's life.
The Elder touched Tedros' chest with a shriveled hand. Tedros winched, his wound still tender. "You're young and handsome, with your whole life ahead of you," the Elder cooed. "Tell us what you know about those that attacked us and I promise I won't hurt you."
Y/n's heart sank. That tone. She'd heard it before. It was the same way he'd told Sophie she'd be sheltered from her assassins...
Before he left her to die.

Y/n tried to pull at her binds again. Agatha pressed her first into Tedros' ribs. Whatever he did, he couldn't play this game–
"Tedros," the prince proclaimed to the Elder. "Tedros is my name."
Agatha bristled, shoving him harder.
"And how do you know our beloved Y/n and Agatha, Tedros?" coaxed the Elder, leaning closer.
"Y/n is my princess," Tedros declared. "Soon to be Queen of Camelot and bloodline to King Arthur. Agatha will be my advisor, and she's Y/n's girlfriend. So I suggest you unhand us at once."

The mob quieted in disbelief, children clutching their storybooks tighter. (Red-haired Radley gaped between Agatha and Y/n. "Always knew they were fishy," he murmured.) Y/n felt the youngest elders grip on her lighten, almost pushing her away, and she could feel stares on her. Y/n tried her best to get Tedros' attention, but to no avail.
