Ambush in the dark.

That's how she would do it, Y/n thought, shadowing the Snake.
She had him cornered.
It would be easy.
And yet, there was still a hesitation inside of her.
She and Japeth were as different as two people can be. But there was still a part of her that understood him, that felt for him. A man who'd been neglected his entire life, desperate for love. And he'd do anything for it, just like her. It's why she had to get rid of him. He was her nemesis.

She listened to his boots against the stone, harsh and clipped, clack, clack, clack, the same rhythm he disposed of his enemies. Without pause. Without compunction.
Y/n would be the opposite, she knew that. For even if she was willing to commit the deed, to do the unthinkable, she would still care. She would give him respect, and she would give him proper rest. If she could, she'd wish to save him. But there was also a part of her who knew this was impossible. But the faster she did the unthinkable, the sooner it would all be over. The Woods speared. The story fixed. Even if Japeth couldn't be saved.

Evil attacks. Good defends.
The first rule of fairy tales.
Not this time.
This time Good would attack, and Evil would have no way to defend.
A death well-earned.

But there were obstacles.
She was an insect, first off. A butterfly in a snake pit wouldn't last long. Try reverting to human and he'd hear her instantly, his scims capturing her and intruding her mind and she'd be back to square one. She also had her cat to think about and manage, and considering the cat was still covered in soot, she'd definitely lose Lepus in this dark room. Plus, considering just how dark it was in here, to the point she couldn't even see the walls, ceiling, or even the floor, as if they were floating in the void. Then add in his scims and magical talents and the fact he'd murdered men much bigger than her— Chaddick, Lancelot, the Sheriff, his own brother— and Y/n's chances seemed as tiny as the stars in the sky, no matter how skillfully she ambushed him. Even if she did manage to defeat him, she'd be trapped in this vault with no one to let her out but a bank full of enemies who'd think she'd been manipulated by a man who they think killed the Bank Manager, so surely she might just be as insane.

For now, Y/n trailed behind Japeth, keeping her distance in the seemingly endless chamber, tracing his frosty scent and contours of his body.
Then he stopped cold.
Scims curled their heads off his suit like cobras.
"I know you're here, little witch," he cooed, like he was toying with her. "The Empress claimed she unfortunately killed you, but I sensed her hesitation. Knew full well that you don't die so easily. Not the Y/n I know. Not my queen. In fact, I debated going back to Camelot once you'd escaped. To find you. To punish you. But in the end, I knew you'd come to me. It's like a game of cat and mouse, you and me. Luckily that was always my favorite game growing up."
His eyes scanned the darkness, like gems in a cave. Y/n's butterfly drifted away from his gaze.
Damn it all, Y/n cursed in her head.
"I guess this will all be a battle of wits and magic. We'll see who's the strongest sorcerer, you, or me," he said with glee. His suit turned black, vanishing him into the dark. "You know, girls have a stink to them that can't rub off. Aric had a good way of describing it. Like a rose gone to rot. I can smell it anywhere. But you... you're different. Your smell is almost a bit pleasant. Like a rose well-cared for. I guess that's why Aric still took a shine to you."

Y/n's wings grazed a wall: the slightest brush against stone—
Eels shot off Japeth's suit, spearing in her direction. Y/n plunged to the ground, barely dodging them. The scims probed the bricks around her, slimy heads inches above her wings. The Snake's glowing eyes roved down, about to find her...
Y/n skidded forward on her tiny thorax, still carrying the little Lepus in her arms. More eels shot off Japeth, following her sound. Y/n dove between scims, the rush of their flight blowing her into a soot-filled corner. She raised her antennae: everywhere she looked, scims bung in the air, inky black ribbons, hunting the darkness for her. Silently, she submerged in soot, blackening her wings, soaking in stale, thick-smelling dust, holding one tiny leg over Lepus' nose to make sure the kitten didn't sneeze.
Japeth didn't move.
She could hear him sniffing the air.
He waited a moment.
A green glow exploded through the room, and Y/n quickly dove into the pile of soot, only poking up her head once the green disappeared.
