(Kinda funny that both this and the last chapter had Merlin in the name, not intentional, just kinda happened because I moved their book club to Merlin's hideout. Woops. ALSO, I did just realize I kinda got dates wrong, cuz I'm bad at math and all. So when it said it was January and then a day after it was March, just imagine that I never said January and it was February. Thank you <3)

With Easter coming, the butterflies set out decorations in the Blue Forest, as if a deadly Trial shouldn't deter from festive traditions. By dawn, nine days before the Trial, the boys had urinated on it from their windows and set it aflame.

As Lady Lesso awarded ranks, Sophie passed notes with Anadil and Hester about paths into the boy's school. In the next aisle, Y/n leaned her frozen chair back, squinting at the faint marks on Sophie's wrist.

It was only noon, but Trial Tryouts were in full swing. Each of the class challenges the last month involved slaying phantom princes that teachers conjured to be as vile as possible, lunging at the girls with zombified faces and sickening creams. Indeed, the teachers seemed to have lost all reluctance, with even Professor Anemone sanctioning the most vicious deaths. Lives were at stake now, and the teachers fully invested in finding the best possible team.

Sophie, Y/n, and Agatha resolved to act enthused through all of it so the Dean wouldn't suspect their impending plans to escape. And indeed, Sophie played her part well, dispatching boy phantoms with alarming vengeance, cheering on her fellow classmates, and remaining immune from frightening witch symptoms that had plagued her weeks before. Even more, Y/n noticed Sophie back to her jaunty old self now, chummily grabbed her arm between classes, romanticizing their return to Gavaldon, and acting as if Y/n's visit to Tedros had simply never happened.
"Elder's won't hurt us if there're no more attacks... and I'll just spend time at your or Agatha's houses instead of mine...," Sophie considered when they'd walked to Lesso's. "Maybe I'll even get my own show after all!"
"As long as you don't put me in it," Agatha grouched before Sophie's grin could make her crack up.

Y/n thought it all over in class, leaning her chair back. Y/n understood it all now, how Sophie could forgive her so quickly, because Sophie had been there. But, at the same time, things started to feel normal between them. And for one thing, Sophie had been an angel after that night. But, Y/n had no idea what to do. Pick Tedros? Pick Sophie? She had a voice in the back of her mind, telling her that she could change them, she could fix them. But, could she? Or was she just naive? Y/n decided however, to trust go along with Sophie, believing that she could redeem the girl. It was Y/n's weakness after all, she was Good through and through, and she believed in the Good of others, even Sophie.

She reclined even more, teetering on one leg, thinking. The fact Sophie had attacked her and Tedros, somehow tricked Agatha into lying, Sophie's behavior as a witch, it all nagged at her. Like another voice, trying to tell her the facts, she couldn't redeem Sophie. But if she couldn't redeem Sophie, then she couldn't redeem Tedros either, could she? She thought back to the boy she had met last year, full of hope, brave, charismatic, and willing to risk his life for hers. Surely, he would be able to be redeemed, taken back to his senses? And if she could redeem him, she could redeem Sophie.

Sophie turned to her, and Y/n's chair nearly toppled.
"Come to the library with me?" Sophie smiled, helping her up. "And Agatha too of course. It's ten minutes before fourth session. We can look up spying spells!"
Y/n smiled and grabbed her bag, shoving doubt off her mind. She just needed to trust Sophie, help Sophie to make the right decisions. Make Sophie Good, and then I can have my happy ending Sophie and Agatha, she thought, following her friend upstairs.
