Y/n sat by the bench she'd met up with Japeth all the nights before.
She just sat there, sprinkling sunflower seeds to a family of ducks. In the dusty water, the dark sky reflected as if it was a scene in a crystal ball, the three-quarter moon tinged with red like a severed head. The crack of a hammer made her shudder and she looked up at the workers building a stage on the Gold Tower hill, directly over the imploded hole exposing the dungeons. Aran paced the stage, a dagger on his belt looking at her with dark eyes. This had been the only night she'd been allowed outside. Two maids flooded the stage with buckets of soapy water and scrubbed the wooden planks, siphoning the dirt into the grass, where it ran downhill, collecting in the pool at Y/n's feet.
Overhead, a new message from Lionsmane gleamed in the sky:
Due to the attack on the Blessing by Tedros' allies, Tedros' execution has been moved up.
The similarity of this attack to the Snake's suggests Tedros and his allies were in league with the Snake all along, sabotaging your realms to make himself stronger. The sooner he is dead, the safer our Woods will be.
The Kingdom Council will witness the execution at dawn and the traitor's head will be mounted on Camelot's gates for the world to see.
Y/n could feel herself holding her breath. It was the first message Rhian had published without her help.
Part of her almost admired the boldness of his lies. How someone could be so Evil. But she couldn't admire him. At least not until he was the one dead, head mounted on the gate.
Her eyes widened after she realized what she'd thought, what she'd imagined. She had wished others would die before, the School Master or Aric to name a few, but never had she taken pleasure in the idea of someone's death. She shook her head, trying to get rid of the idea.
Wind blew through her dress, still forced to wear that awful white dress that changed on a whim, which was still just as creepy. A short while ago, she'd been about to get on Hort's stymph and escaped this place. Holding Hort's hand, she'd tasted freedom. She'd looked into the eyes of a boy who cared for her, who loved her, no matter what. She'd glimpsed into the happiness of being with those she loved, a happiness she'd almost forgotten in such dark times.
But never did her story go the way she wanted.
The story wasn't just about her after all.
That's why she stayed behind, against both Hort and Agatha's wishes.
Midnight had long come and gone.
In a few hours, Tedros and Sophie would be dead. Along with Professor Dovey, seven more friends and students.
How do you stop an execution?
How do you stop an axe from coming down?
She didn't even know where the prisoners were being held. But even then, wherever it was it was surely heavily guarded. She'd be caught if she tried. Even from the outside, there was no way a guard wouldn't see. The only thing she knew was that Rhian wouldn't interrupt her seemingly useless time to think, he was too busy speaking with the Kingdom council inside. The rulers of the Woods had descended upon Camelot for a week-long royal wedding, along with their servants and flunkies, packing every last inn and guesthouse, and now less than a day after they'd been dungbombed out of a church, they would gather for the beheading of King Arthur's son.
Until now, they'd mostly sided with Rhian over Tedros, believing their new king to be a Snake-slaying saint. But Agatha's appearance in the sky had changed all that. Y/n had seen the rulers' faces outside the church, looking at Rhian with new doubt, new questions. He'd lied to them about her girlfriend's capture. He'd lied to the entire Woods. What else had he lied about? they must be wondering... Surely this is why the Council had convened a meeting.
She glanced back at the castle, where she'd seen the leaders stream in before sunset, grim-faced and muttering to one another. There's been no sign of them since.
