"Come, girls! We need to see what the pen is writing before it turns the page!" Professor Dovey said, leading the group towards Evil's castle. "Once it moves on, it won't let us flip back–"
Hort was desperate to take a bath and put on some prettier clothes, he hadn't been able to earlier since he was forced to help Sophie, but now that he had to fight for Y/n's attention against both Sophie and Agatha, he couldn't leave them unsupervised.
Every time he thought he could be free from rivals for Y/n, at least for a moment, they always had to return, clinging to her like leeches, more meddling than ever. Why couldn't these toads mind their own business? Or die like Rafal did? Hadn't they had enough already. When was it his turn? When would normal little Hort get a chance?
He knew he wasn't as pretty as evers, and as Sophie. But he was normal, he was real. "Real" as in you woke up with smelly armpits and you broke out in pimples if you ate too many fried pig's feet and you had to slave in the Groom Room gym for every ounce of muscle– time that you would rather spend learning spells or catching lizards or doing something useful; but if you didn't waste half your day pumping Norse hammers and swinging kettlebells and doing one-handed pushups, then you'd be a skinny, oily loser for the rest of your life.
And yet, in the end, it didn't matter how much work Hort did to improve himself. He still couldn't find love. At least not the love he wanted. Not Y/n. Sure, they hadn't been able to spend nearly as much time together as the others had. Sure, she was trying to keep a kingdom under control. Sure, she had other partners already, and what was between her and him wasn't as clear as the other three. And who would want a Hort when there were pretty Evers and Nevers acting like Evers around?
That's what he resented most about those kinds of people, especially Everboys. Girls liked them for their looks, when they'd done nothing to earn those looks. The stupid idiots were sculpted like gods out of sheer dumb luck, the way other people are born with crooked faces or clubbed legs, and instead of being thankful or humble about this luck, they acted like they'd deserved it!
But even if Y/n was smart enough to see through these arrogant gasbags, he couldn't help but feel those pretty Evers had an advantage he didn't. Sometimes he almost thought of her as a little mouse, who couldn't tell trap from cheese. A mouse only he could save.
Why did he want her then? Why care about a girl who for one already had others, and who couldn't see he was better than them, or at least equal? Why idolize someone who would rather kiss the hot blond boy with the charm of a pineapple over a thinking, feeling boy like him?
Because Y/n was different. She wasn't like most Evers, she wasn't like Sophie. She had a heart. She was a thinker too. She was a great girl. A great girl who just happened to too often fall for people who quite frankly didn't deserve her. She was about to marry Tedros after all, and he was a boil on the backside of humanity.
He should have been by her side already, able to get closer with her. He would have gone to Camelot as soon as he was done with his quest. Instead, he got dragged into being a history teacher, because Sophie had convinced him Y/n wouldn't have had time for him, and she would be much more proud of him for being a teacher. Not that he had a choice anyway, Sophie could force his quest however she wanted. But he had been able to manipulate it to his own way, saying he would do it if he and Sophie made a pact, like Tedros and Agatha, a pact to share Y/n.
Still, he had no business being professor of history in the first place, since he didn't know the slightest thing about history and was pretty sure his students knew it too but they never complained because he gave them high ranks and passed out candy every Friday. And he was also sure his students knew he was in love with Y/n, since they would always ask him about what he thought about Y/n, if he would marry her, and even once got a letter threatening him to stay away from Y/n. Still, most students seemed to support him at least. It made him like his students more than he thought possible, and he'd convinced himself that his crusade to marry Y/n wasn't just for him anymore, but for all Evil-kind. To prove him, a true Never, could do it.
