Evelyn Sader, Y/n thought, steering the rickshaw up the spiral track.
A name from the past. Now a curse in the present. Evelyn Sader: imperious and milky smooth, with that wicked dress made out of butterflies, Evelyn Sader, Dean of the School for Girls, who'd brought the School Master back from the dead, to show her love for him. But he didn't care for her love. All he wanted was to play puppet-master for two girls. So he'd killed Evelyn Sader so she'd be out of his way. That was supposed to be the end of Evelyn's story. Her dark, devious schemes of love had borne no fruit.
But somewhere earlier in Evelyn's story, those dark schemes had borne fruit.
Because Evelyn had hexed and forced herself on King Arthur to have his sons. That much was clear. Unless the scene had been fake, but how could that be when the scene came from Rhian's own blood, not his mind.
Still Y/n had so many questions. How had Evelyn Sader even met Lady Gremlaine? Did Lady Gremlaine know Evelyn had used the spansel herself? Had Gremlaine known Evelyn had birthed Arthur's sons? Was that Lady Gremlaine's terrible "secret"? Had Arthur known it had happened? Had the School Master known it had happened?
Y/n was so distracted, she was driving the rickshaw straight towards the side of the track—
She corrected course, holding down panic.
She'd stolen the rickshaw from Subby the page boy (she'd made sure to leave some gold for him as compensation), because he'd parked the cart right outside the window of the bedroom they'd slept in. She'd carefully floated down onto the rickshaw as the gnome's body was snoring, sleeping against a tree, and then she'd carefully ridden off as she turned her and Lepus' bodies invisible. But as she started to paddle, the wheels screeched against stone, and the gnome had bolted awake to see his cart scuttling away, no driver in sight. "Bhoot!" he brayed. "Bhoooot! There's a ghost stealing my cart!... Wait, gold! It gave me gold! Thank you, bhoot!" Y/n guessed bhoot meant ghost in gnome, so she did the best to play the part, swerving menacingly as she heard the page boy celebrate at all his gold far away in the distance. And soon she was long gone with his rickshaw, cursing upwards into the bright lights of the city.
That's when she heard the screams of her lovers, and she peddled harder, past Teapea's Temple and the Musée de Gnome, stress wrenching at her ribs. She knew that if she'd told her lovers her plan, what she was about to do, they might all combust, their anger unmeasurable. She needed to do this on her own. Even if she knew their hearts might be broken that she left, even if they thought she left because she loved Rhian. But when she did what she needed to, they would all know the truth. She knew they would mourn her, but if it meant they could live, if it meant they'd be free, Y/n would sacrifice herself.
This all had to do with what Y/n had seen in a crystal.
Not the blood crystal.
Another crystal.
A crystal she'd found on her own.
The crystal Agatha and Sophie had caught her staring at before she'd said it was a personal memory of her parents and slipped it into her pocket.
But it hadn't been a memory of her parents.
This crystal was the sole reason she'd left those she loved behind in the middle of the night.
And this is what she'd seen inside...
Her own self.
Cowering in the corner of the king's bedroom, her cheek gashed, her white, ruffled dress and Lepus' fur soaked with blood.
Rhian was across the room, in his blue-and-gold king's suit.
So was Japeth, in his silver-and-blue liege's suit.
They were fighting.
More than fighting.
A Lion and a Snake, going for the kill.
Hands clawed at eyes and hair. Teeth sank into skin. Punches landed, spewing blood from mouths, their faces mangled to crimson pulps. The twins battled onto the bed, each straining to get Excalibur—
Rhian got there first.
The blade swung through the air, the edge of catching the light like a sunflare—
It impaled Japeth's chest.
Clean through the heart.
Rhian drew the sword out and his brother fell.
Slowly, Rhian kneeled over Japeth's body, watching him take his last breath. The king bowed his head, holding his brother's corpse.
Excalibur lay abandoned behind him.
Rhian didn't see Y/n move from the corner.
The fear was gone from her face.
Replaced with intent.
She raised the sword over Rhian's back—
The crystal went dark. Then replayed.
