As Agatha paced Merlin's Menagerie on the roof of the School for Good, she kept her eye on the sunset, waiting for the first sign of Y/n... and her friends too of course...
She glanced back and saw the good and Evil faculty silently fanned out behind her and the spying eyes of first years peeping through the frosted glass doors from inside the castle. Agatha paced faster between the hedge sculptures from King Arthur's tale. She looked up again.
Still no stymphs.
What's taking them so long? she thought, shuffling past the newest scene added to the garden. A leafy statue of her, Y/n, and Tedros.
She needed to be sure Hort had done his job, and that Y/n was safe with him.
She needed to know who'd escaped the dungeons.
More importantly, she needed to know who hadn't—She paced right into a hedge of Arthur pulling the sword from the stone, the rough shurbs slapping against her face.
Agatha sighed, remembering the moment when Tedros tried to pull a sword from the stone at his coronation. The moment had precipitated everything that had followed. And she still had no answer to why he had failed and Rhian hadn't.She looked to the sky once more.
Nothing.
This time, however, she could see purple detonations of light over the school's North Gate, challenging the bubble of green fog around the school.
Rhian's men must be attacking Professor Manley's shield again.
She peered closer at the purple light. Magic, she thought. But Rhian's pirates couldn't do magic. So who was helping them?
On the shoes of Halfway Bay, Professor Manley cast rays of green mist to reinforce the shield, while the school's wolf guards herded around the moat towards the North Gate, ready to fight Rhian's men if they got through. It's only a matter of time, Agatha thought. How long until the shield gave away? A week? A few days? Rhian's men would show them no mercy. She needed to get the students and teachers out before the shield fell. Which meant they needed a new safe house... somewhere she and her army could hide...
But first, Agatha needed her princess back.
She knew that she shouldn't be hoping for Y/n to have escaped over the others. That it wasn't Good in the slightest to root for someone else to have been left behind. But in times like these, even the purest of souls can't always be Good.
She leaned against the prickly green blade of Arthur's sword, out of sight of the teachers and first years.
This wasn't how it was supposed to go.
She was supposed to have all her friends back, safe and sound. Especially Y/n.
But nothing went as it was supposed to.
Never in their fairy tale. She had decoded Y/n's messages to her. The one about Histro, all the first letters in every sentence together spelled CRYSTAL. The next one, about Bethany, the first letters spelled BALL. Then in the one about her capture, CRYSTAL again.
Somehow, she had managed to get Dovey's crystal ball to work. No one was sure how Dovey had named her as the second, the other person who could use the ball, she hadn't even been born yet, but it worked. She'd managed to instruct the older students, then together with Hort who'd made his way from the carriage to there after he was rescued together with Bodhi and Laithan who'd been the two to rescue him. But they had called for the stymphs too late, and the pirates had detected them quickly. After a while it all filled up with so much smoke that she lost track of what was even happening, or who escaped and who didn't.
She made a last ditch effort to try and contact Y/n, to tell her to run while she had the chance, but Agatha started to feel the regret boil in her stomach. Not because it had been Evil to tell Y/n to leave the others behind and escape while she could. Agatha regretted saying none of that. She regretted telling Y/n there were even people left. She should have lied, she should have said everyone was rescued and Y/n was the last one. She should have done anything to make sure Y/n came back to her, where she was safe.
Even if it meant others might die.
Even if it meant others had to die.
