Whenever Tedros was stressed, he worked out. So to see him sweating at 6:00 a.m. in the Groom Room, throwing hammers, pumping dumbbells, and swimming laps, meant he had a lot on his mind. It was understandable. The Snow Ball invitations had been slipped under doors during the night. As he scaled climbing ropes made of braided blond hair, he cursed the fact he would spend Christmas at a Ball. Why did everything with Evers revolve around oppressive formal dances?
The problem with Balls was that boys had to do all the work. Girls could flirt and scheme and wish all they wanted, but in the end, it's the boy who had to make his choice and hope she said yes. Tedros wasn't worried he wouldn't get a date, probably any girl would want him. But he was worried the girl he wanted to ask wouldn't say yes, Y/n.
He couldn't remember a girl he actually liked before now. And yet, he always had one following him, claiming to be his girlfriend. It happened every time. Sometimes they felt like pests, clinging to him because he was a prince, because he had life set for him. But then they would always leave, finding any other boy who they were obsessed over.
The Guinevere Curse.
Tedros was only nine when his mother, Guinevere, made off with knight Lancelot, leaving him with his father alone. He heard the whispers that followed. "She found love." But what about all the times she said it to him? Which love was real.
Night after night, Tedros watched his father slip further and further into heartbreak and drunkenness. Death came within the year, after one last fight at the Four Point, when Tedros was 10. Even after he had begged his father not to go. He resented his father too, he had just left Tedros on his own, the advisors having to take over the castle. And as he became older, he realized his father was just as bad as his mother, because his father forced love that was never there. But his mother had left him too. He had even tried to send his mother letters, hoping she would come back for him, but of course she never did.
Tedros climbed higher and higher on the golden braids, veins straining against muscle.
I won't make the same mistake as them. I won't be like them.
He slipped and he fell off the ropes, crashing to a soft mat. Cheeks red, he glowered at the taunting waterfalls of hair. All the girls here were mistakes. Guineveres who confessed loves with kisses. He only had one he trusted, but she made him nervous. For once, he found a girl he wasn't sure he was good enough for.

Daylight flecked across Y/n's pillow. She stirred and saw Sophie hunched on the floor by the door.
"Sophie? Why are you still here?" Y/n asked, waking up Agatha in the bed beside hers. "If the fairies or wolves catch you, it's the Doom Room again. Besides, you should go back to write that anonymous love poem to Tedr–"
"You didn't tell me there's a Ball." Sophie held up two glittering snowflake invitations, Agatha and Y/n's names in pearls.
"Oh, who cares about a stupid Ball?" Agatha groaned. "We'll be long gone. Now make sure that poem talks about who he is as a person. His honor, his valor, his cour–" Sophie was smelling the invite.
"Sophie, please listen to us. The closer we get to the Ball, the more Tedros looks for a date. The more he looks for a date, the more he falls in love with someone else! The more he falls in love with someone else, the more he leaves us here to die. Okay?" Y/n said, trying to reason with the other.
"But I want to be his date."
"YOU'RE NOT INVITED!" Agatha yelled, tired of Sophie's antics. Sophie pursed her lips.
"Sophie, Tedros needs to kiss you as soon as possible," said Y/n. "We don't have time to wait for the Ball."
"Honestly, do they even check invitations at a Ball?" Sophie said. Agatha snatched the invitations.
"Stupid me. I thought you wanted to stay alive!" Agatha shoved her towards the door. "Use the Tunnel of Trees–"
"Marble hall, glittering gowns, waltzing under stars..."
"If a wolf catches you, just say you're lost–"
"A ball, a real Ball!"Agatha kicked her out. Sophie scowled back. "My roommates will help me. They're real friends unlike you, Aggie." She slammed the door on Agatha's shocked face. She and Y/n looked at each other and sighed.
