Viya headed out of her hideout, she carefully peered around the corner, still scarred from her last griever encounter.
She had stayed inside all day yesterday in fear of the grievers coming back, but she eventually realized that she couldn't let them win.
So, this morning she headed out back into the maze. She had vowed to not let herself rest, she had to condition herself harshly if she wanted to survive.
It wasn't that she had much to live for, her life was mostly filled with boredom. But her spite kept her going. She couldn't let the gladers win, she'd survive on her own and prove that she never needed them.
Her pace quickened as she exited her usual area, she'd mapped all of the close portions, and it was time to expand farther.
Maybe the exit never lied in the outer sections anyways, if they had missed her hollow, what else had they missed? Maybe the exit of the maze was closer than they thought. Viya hoped she was right, because without being able to cut through the maze she'd never be able to make it across to section two or six. She'd really only be able to access section four, seven, and one. If she was lucky. And even if she did make it to the outer sections, she wouldn't be able to map the entire thing, and with only one day to do so before the maze shifted, it felt like an impossible task.
Of course if the opportunity came she'd take it, but she wasn't counting on it.
As Viya rounded the corner she stopped abruptly. She heard voices.
She pressed her back up against the wall as she peaked her one eye around the corner. She saw two of her former colleagues resting up against a wall as they sipped on their water bottles.
"Slackers," she muttered. She'd never let her runners take a rest, not even half an hour into their run.
She slinked back into the shadows as she reluctantly decided to take another route. She could've waited for them to leave, but just seeing them made her angry.
Those were the same boys who willingly surrendered her to maze, and here they were laughing as they took a break? It wasn't fair.
Rage fluttered in Viyas heart as she continued her run. She could feel her chest burning, but something in her wouldn't let her stop. And it got to the point where she wasn't evening checking corners or caring where she was going, she just wanted to run.
She'd like to say she found a sudden sense of determination, but she'd be lying. She knew she was angry, she hadn't let herself feel sorrow for herself, but seeing those boys made her mad, and jealous.
They were the first people she's seen since she had been banished, and it hurt her that they didn't seem to care. They probably did deep down, but Viya wished she could see that they cared. But maybe they actually didn't care, it didn't matter to them that she had been sentenced to death. And maybe they thought she deserved it. Nobody knew the truth, nobody knew the actual story. So maybe they truly believed that she deserved it.
And that possibility hurt Viya more than any griever sting could.
She had seen those boys as family, she watched every single one of them come up in the box. And she was the one there to help them up and dust the dirt off their knees, and what did they give her in return?
Nothing.
Viya couldn't help but think about Minho, was he the same way? Was he continuing on as if nothing happened. Was that what everyone was doing?
Viya stopped, her chest was burning and angry tears had started to stream down her face. She had never let herself feel or think about the gladers, but the second she did she became uncontrollably angry.
Viya watched as a beetle-blade slowly scurried across the floor, its blinking red dot taunting her, reminding her that someone was behind this all.
