Viya heard the footsteps approaching long before he entered the room. She was expecting his arrival, what she was not expecting was to see a living ghost enter the room.
"What is it that you–" The boy stopped to stare at Viya.
Viya paused as she stared at the familiar face.
Lawrence ignored the shock and began to speak, "I want you to take her out, show her the wall, then bring her back and find her a bed." Lawrence explained.
"A..alright." He stuttered out.
Lawrence motioned for Viya to stand up, she walked towards her tour guide awkwardly.
"Watch out for cranks, Gally!" Lawrence shouted behind the pair as they walked out.
The pair walked awkwardly through the narrow hallways of the base, there was an odd amount of distance between them, not enough for a person to fit in, but too much for just two people.
The silence was overpowering, neither knew what to say to the other, what do you say to a boy who you thought was dead? Was this what the gladers felt when they saw her for the first time?
Gally held the door open for Viya as they exited the building. She took a deep breath of the fresh air that wasn't actually that fresh.Eventually, Gally broke the silence. "Stay close, the streets are dangerous in the evenings."
Viya nodded, then realized that Gally was in front of her so he couldn't actually see her. They crept through the alleyways, and as they walked, Viya noticed the pistol strapped to Gally's waist.
They soon made it to the main roadway, Gally seemed more relaxed as they got out into the open. Viya noticed the handmade street lights that illuminated the street enough to keep cranks away. She then noticed the towering wall in the distance.
"What the..." She muttered.
"Right." Gally remarked.
"What is it?"
"WCKD built it around the city, it keeps us out and themselves safe. Once they realized the Flare was spreading rapidly, they started moving here. They destroyed houses to build it, leaving more people homeless." He explained, "That's when Lawrence came around, he converted the abandoned mall into a safe haven for the community. Despite his looks he's actually quite nice. He mostly takes in kids and the homeless, but he also converts old warehouses into centers too.""How does he do it all?" Viya asked in astonishment.
"He has a 'guy' for everything, and most people are happy to help him because they know it's worth their while."
Viya paused, "So why does he want to get inside of the city so bad?"
"He thinks WCKD is stupid, he thinks their funding should go to the people so they can rebuild society rather than trying to find an imaginary cure."
Viya nodded, it seems like the guy isn't all that bad.
Gally turned to face Viya, "So, how'd you get here?"
Viya hesitated, but she realized there wasn't a point in not telling him. Maybe it was the fact that she was still pumped full of drugs, or maybe she just needed someone to talk to, either way, she told him everything. She told him of the desert, getting to the right arm, WCKD coming in, her getting captured and the dreadful white room.
"You've had quite the journey." Gally commented once she was finished.
"Yeah," Viya said with a laugh, "How'd you get here, I thought you..."
"Died?"Viya nodded.
"Well I basically did, if Lawrences guys hadn't found me when they did I would've died." Gally paused before he began to talk, "They came in to raid the facility, what they weren't expecting is to see a half-dead boy on the ground. They realized I was immune and decided to take me with the slim chance I'd survive. And after a punctured lung and three weeks of recovery I did."
Viya stared at the giant wall in front of her, a sudden wave of determination washing over her. If taking down WCKD meant getting past those walls, then getting past those walls is what she'd do.
