"Section one today." Viya commented, "Any advice?"
"Well duh, I'm not just gonna go searching for grievers"Viya took one last drink of her water bottle.
"Do you think I'll see any grievers today?" She asked.
"Good...good" She muttered, "Well I should get going, smell you later!" Viya taunted as she exited her room.
The walls towered over her like always, it was something Viya never thought she'd get used to. You could never see too far into the distance back in the glade, but the maze was ten times worse. The only thing that existed in the maze were the walls. They were all there was, and all she had.
Viya's pace quickened as she slowly emerged into her usual pace. Section one was close, it was an easy journey to make and one that she didn't mind. The path to section one was wider and the hallways were twice as long as any of the other sections. Every section had its twist, section seven had the blades, section three had the super long ivy, section six had shorter walls, while section two had taller walls.
Viya clenched her fists as she ran, and she kept glancing side to side looking out for anyone that could be coming. Her one hand was bandaged tightly, the scrap marks were still there, but she hadn't changed the bandage since she first put them on. The bandage was dirty, and slightly gross, but it didn't bother her. She wasn't going to put it on at all, but Watcher had convinced her to after he went on his rant about 'infections' and 'diseases'.
It wasn't long before the sun was in the middle of the sky signaling to Viya that it was time for lunch. She pulled out her nutrient bar that was tucked tightly into her running vest.
She ripped open the wrapper and took out the brown bar. She discarded the packaging under some vines before she started to eat. The bar was bland and dry, but it got her through the day, that's all that mattered.
Viya was about to take her last bite when a looming shadow appeared behind her. Viya practically jumped out of her skin, but she didn't have to turn around to see what was behind her, she already knew from the smell of motor oil and the mechanical sounds that were radiating from the creature.
Viya dropped the rest of her lunch and immediately started sprinting back down the corridor that she had originally come from. She could hear the griever behind her as she ran, and it was very close to her.
Viya didn't have to think about what path would lead her back to her room, she already knew the way like the back of her hand.
She skidded sound corners and drifted around turns, but no matter what she did the griever would not leave her alone.
She was almost back to her room, and usually she would've already lost the griever by then, but this one was still tracking her down, and it would not let her leave.
Viya was in the final stretch, only a few more meters before she was safe. She turned the final corner, and she could see her small doorway at the end of the hallway. She pumped her arms faster and despite her legs feeling like they were going to fall off, she kept going.
She outstretched her hand towards the door, and she had one foot in when a griever claw was thrown down on her leg. She screamed out in pain as the machine ripped through her flesh.
She was almost there, she was almost safe.
She pulled herself forwards, trying to grab onto something that would pull her forwards.
The griever continued to try and pull her backwards, but she couldn't die like this. Not here. Not so close to her sanctuary.
Viya screamed as she pulled herself forwards one last time, she didn't expect to make it, but to her surprise she landed on the floor of her room.
