Amelia's expression remained neutral, her voice steady. "Megan, can you try to speak for me? Just say my name."

Megan's mouth moved, but instead of sounds, only disjointed syllables came out. It was a far cry from a coherent word, let alone a full name.

As Dr. Shepard continued to assess Megan's condition, Maya's attention was suddenly drawn to Carina entering the room, tears streaming down her face.

Maya's heart clenched at the sight of her girlfriend in such obvious distress. She stood up from her chair, her voice soft. "Carina, are you alright?"

Carina rushed to Maya's side, burying her face into her shoulder. Her body trembled against Maya, sobbing uncontrollably. Maya wrapped her arms around Carina, pulling her close, her concern for her girlfriend's well-being taking over.

Dr. Shepherd turned to the side, giving them a moment, while she continued to observe Megan.

Maya held Carina tightly, her voice filled with worry. "Hey, what happened? Why are you crying?"

Carina looked at Maya and said "You know I got page the pregnant woman that was in a car accident she and her bambina pass away I couldn't save them."

Maya's heart dropped as she listened to Carina's words. The pain and guilt in Carina's voice were palpable. She pulled Carina closer, holding her tightly.

"Oh, Carina... I'm so sorry. It's not your fault. You did everything you could."

Carina's tears continued to fall, her body shaking with each sob. "I just... I just keep thinking I could've done more, I should've done more..."

Maya gently stroked Carina's hair, her voice soft and comforting. "No, Carina. You have to stop blaming yourself. Medicine isn't a perfect science, and not every situation has a perfect outcome. It doesn't make you any less of an amazing doctor."

Carina looked up at Maya, her eyes filled with sorrow and self-doubt. "But what if I could've saved them? What if there was something I missed, something I should've done differently?"

Maya cupped Carina's face tenderly, her touch gentle but firm. "You have to stop this. You can't let the what-ifs consume you. You're a brilliant doctor, and you've saved countless lives. You can't take the blame for the ones you couldn't save."

Carina nodded, her tears slowly subsiding. "I know... deep down, I know."

She rested her head against Maya's shoulder, closing her eyes.

Amelia, having observed the interaction, spoke up, her voice soft. "Carina, you need to remember that you're only human. Medicine is a field where we do our best to save lives, but we can't carry the weight of every loss on our shoulders. You did your best, and that's all anyone can ask of you."

Carina looked at Amelia and said "Thank you."

Amelia gave a small smile. "You're welcome. It's important for all doctors, especially those in high-pressure specialties like yours, to remember that it's okay to feel the weight of these situations. But it's also important to not let that weight crush you."

Maya looked at Amelia and said "How's my sister."

Amelia looked up from her notes, her gaze steady. "Your sister is responding to some basic stimuli, such as light and touch, but she's still disoriented and has difficulty with speech. We'll need to run some more tests to determine the extent of the brain injury."

Maya's worry deepened, her eyes glued to her sister. She took a deep breath, trying to keep her voice steady. "What kind of tests are you going to run?"
