Maya nodded, her worry for Carina mixing with the dread of the upcoming ultrasound. "I will. I promise. Just go home and get some rest. I'll call you soon."

She watched as Carina slowly walked away, each step looking like an effort. She had hoped this day would go smoothly, but now her mind was filled with worry for her fiancée.

Maya took a deep breath, trying to shake off the anxiety and focus on the task ahead. She turned and continued down the hallway, her steps heavy with both exhaustion and worry.

As Maya followed the nurse into the exam room, her feet felt heavy and weary. The sterile, clinical environment did nothing to soothe her nerves, and her mind kept drifting back to Carina, wondering if she had made it home safely.

She sat on the cold, hard exam table and waited, the minutes ticking by slowly, each one feeling like an hour.

The silence of the room was broken only by the rhythmic beeping of the monitors and the occasional footsteps outside the door. Maya's eyes flicked around the room, taking in every little detail. It seemed like an eternity until the door finally opened.

Dr. Addison Montgomery appeared, holding a file in her hand. Her expression was a mix of calm professionalism and empathy.

Addison greeted Maya with a warm smile. "Good morning, Maya. I hope you're feeling alright today."

Maya attempted a weak smile, but it came out more like a grimace. "As alright as I can be, considering the circumstances. I'm tired, nauseated, and more than a bit anxious about today."

Addison nodded with understanding. "That's completely natural, given everything you're going through. But we should be able to provide you some answers after the ultrasound, so try to relax as much as possible."

Maya tried to take a deep breath and release some of the tension in her body, but it was difficult. Every one of her muscles seemed to be tightly coiled with worry and anticipation.

She nodded, signaling that she understood and was ready to proceed. "I'll do my best."

Addison prepared the ultrasound machine, her hands moving with practiced ease. "Good. Now, I'm going to ask you to lie back and pull up your shirt a bit so that I can apply the gel. Is that okay with you?"

Maya nodded and slowly laid back on the exam table, pulling her shirt up to expose her belly. The coldness of the gel on her skin made her shiver, but she tried to stay still and focused.

Addison moved the ultrasound probe across Maya's abdomen, her eyes fixed on the screen. The room was filled with a rhythmic whooshing sound as the image of Maya's uterus appeared on the monitor.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Addison spoke. "Okay, Maya, let's see how your ovaries are responding to the medication so far..."

Maya's breath caught in her throat as she stared at the screen, her heart pounding in her chest. The image of her ovaries on the monitor seemed to taunt her, their silence and stillness leaving her in a state of agonized suspense. She swallowed hard, her mouth dry, and forced herself to speak. "And...?"

Addison's face revealed nothing as she studied the image. Maya could feel the seconds ticking by like hours, each one adding to her tension.

Finally, Addison spoke. "It seems like there's some ovarian stimulation happening. Your follicles are starting to grow, but it's still early, so it's hard to say exactly how many we might have."

Maya felt a mixture of relief and disappointment. On one hand, it was good news that her ovaries were responding to the medication, but the uncertainty of the situation left her feeling unfulfilled.
