"Remind me again why am I doing this?"
"Because I'm your best friend in the entire world and you love me so much."
"That's it. I'm getting off."
"$300."
"Right. Remind me of that every two minutes."
The couch dipped deeper under their combined weight. Mingyu shifted Wonwoo, who was straddling his lap, into a more comfortable position, his hands settling on his roommate's waist as he tugged him closer. Space ceased to exist between them.
Grumbling under his breath, Wonwoo thought about how stupid it was to agree to something this crazy, even if the money was tempting.
"Just be done with it so I can get off. This feels weird," Wonwoo complained, arms loosely draped around Mingyu's neck the way the tanned man had directed him.
Mingyu merely giggled, mischievous eyes catching glimpses of Wonwoo's stressed gaze. Eyes that were either squeezed shut or darting anywhere but at him.
"Okay, okay. I just have to make it convincing so they don't hound me anymore, alright?"
Being popular was something Mingyu enjoyed. The attention, the compliments, even the occasional small gifts — he appreciated them all. But there had to be a line, especially once people started pressuring him into blind dates or events he really had no interest in.
At first, Mingyu agreed to attend a few out of politeness. But during one particular dinner, it became increasingly difficult to maintain his composure when his date kept groping him, her manicured nails digging into his skin as if determined to draw out something more than the polite smile he wore all evening. Things only worsened when she kept refilling his glass, clearly intending to get him drunk and take advantage of him.
And it wasn't just that night. Every date he'd gone on, all arranged by his senior classmates, ended in the same kind of disaster. He had somewhat foreseen it, but simply couldn't refuse out of respect for his sunbaes.
After seeing a random TikTok clip about a romcom movie, where the male lead asked the female lead to take intimate couple photos together and post them on social media to stop his coworkers from pressuring him into group mixers, Mingyu thought—why not try it?
Of course, he couldn't just ask anyone. If he chose the wrong person, they might seriously delude themselves into thinking they had a chance with him, when all he wanted were a few pictures and a fake love story.
That's why he turned to his stone-cold, rational roommate. The one person capable of giving him exactly what he needed.
"Just do it, man. My paper isn't going to write itself," Wonwoo muttered, tilting his head toward the phone in Mingyu's hand, urging him to just take the photos. His face clearly displayed his disdain for the position he'd been quite literally forced into.
"Alright, alright. Here we go."
Mingyu had set up a mirror, leaning it against their living room table so it sat closer to the couch. It gave them a perfect reflection of themselves cuddling. Just like real lovers would. He took a practice shot with the rear camera, grinning at the result. His hand rested naturally on Wonwoo's waist, and he couldn't help but like the way it looked.
"Done? Can I get off now?"
Without waiting for an answer, Wonwoo shifted his leg, only to be caught by Mingyu's hand, keeping him in place. Finally, Wonwoo met his eyes. Or rather, glared at him — not wanting to spend another minute sitting on his lap like some oversized cat.
"Wait. We should take more, don't you think? I mean, now that we're like this, might as well make the most of it, don't you agree?" Mingyu reasoned, tilting his head to the side as he gave Wonwoo the biggest pair of puppy eyes he could muster. A look he knew his roommate was weak against. Much to Mingyu's pleasure, of course.
