"Mingyu?"
"Uh—sorry? Do I know you?"
"Oh my god. It's been ages, bro. It's me—Wonwoo."
Mingyu blinked at the man, his eyes raking over him from head to toe, utterly confused as that name finally sank in.
Chuckling, Mingyu lowered his head. His friend stood right by his side, glancing at him just as puzzled, her lips caught between her teeth, unsure of where she stood in all of this. The awkwardness hanging in the air suddenly made the entire trip feel suffocating.
"I'm sorry, I'm confused. The Wonwoo I know..."
Mingyu's eyes scanned him again—slower this time. His brow knit together as his gaze lingered on the man's face, beaming back at him, clearly overjoyed to have run into a familiar one.
"...doesn't really look like you?"
The man—who really was Wonwoo, by the way—nodded as he laughed, completely understanding why Mingyu hadn't recognized him after all these years.
"No, it's fine. I get it, I get it," he laughed harder, wiping the tears gathering at the corners of his eyes. "I mean, so much has changed about my appearance. I get why you couldn't tell it was me."
The woman standing next to Mingyu finally moved, nudging him slightly to get his attention.
"Uh... that's Wonwoo?" she whispered. The image she had formed of this so-called dreamy man—one Mingyu had been raving about for years—was very clearly not meeting her expectations.
Mingyu opened his mouth to answer, but the words refused to come. He didn't even have an answer that could confirm all the praise he had once spoken about his first love—the same praises he'd told Mina, the woman still eyeing Wonwoo now.
"I don't even know at this point," Mingyu whispered back, his voice low enough for only Mina to hear.
"How about I help you with your bags first? As much as I'd love to catch up right now, I'm afraid I have other guests who need me."
Wonwoo offered his hands for their bags. Both of them were too stunned to refuse, mindlessly handing them over to the still-ever-smiling Wonwoo, who took them and immediately started walking off toward where their rooms would be—leaving the two of them standing at the concierge desk, mouths slightly agape.
"You have a lot of explaining to do, Mingyu," Mina said, disbelief lacing her voice as she watched Wonwoo walk away, greeting passing guests who waved back at him, their smiles just as bright as his. It was like everyone in this damn place was filled to the brim with happy thoughts, no worries at all.
The two arrived in their room, much to Mingyu's relief, Wonwoo was long gone. All that remained were their bags and two towels craftly shaped into animals neatly placed on each bed: an elephant on Mingyu's, a swan on Mina's.
"One room, huh?" Mina said as she plopped down on one of the beds, clearly not thrilled about sharing a space with her college friend.
"Not much of a choice, considering this place is insanely popular. It was either this or that place further down south," Mingyu replied, reminding her of the options they'd gone through before booking their vacation. "And I'm assuming you wouldn't want to sleep in a twin-sized bed surrounded by swamps?"
Mina shuddered. The images she'd seen online were enough to make her shriek. The thought of spending even one night in a place like that made her blood run cold. This room was a far cry from the nightmare she'd imagined.
"Yup. This is definitely the better choice," she nodded, giving Mingyu a thumbs-up before lying flat on the bed, arms spread out like a snow angel as she felt the cool sheets beneath her.
