"This boy would have had to wake up by 4 am or 4:30 am and leave the house by 5 am or 5:30 am to get to school early, and seeing as it is too early in the morning, it is also dangerous for a boy his age, and looking at the boy's profile and picture, he is malnourished and too small for his age, which tells us something, one of them being that he had been abused for a long time because, based on the father, he was well to do and had the finances needed to support the child with more than his tuition but failed to do so. His mother died when he was three years old, so it's already been five years to mourn, and though grief is hard and long, it can also cause anger. What I'm saying is, there has to be a reason why his relatives from the mother's side were never allowed to see him and why he would be capable but choose not to give his son the much-needed t-fare to go to school." I explained, and a realization fell on their faces.
"So, you're saying the father did it intentionally?" Mr. Tolu asked with curiosity.
"I'm saying the father is hiding something. You don't see this kind of bruise on a small child from just a fall. It's evidence of continuous abuse, and if it's not from the father, then maybe from the fact that he leaves the house so early and can face some thugs, but still, it would be the father's fault," I explained to him, making him nod his head.
"So, if what you say is plausible and can very much happen, then how do you intend we tackle it?" he asked.
"Invite the relatives for questioning as the lawyers and inquire why they were not allowed to see the boy. Let the boy be there when they come and watch his reaction; if it's good and he can walk to them without complaining, then we know something is wrong. However, trauma messes with the mind, so I would also suggest we use picture psychology to get the person who did those things to him, and if possible, let his friend be by him as support. The neighbors should also be questioned to know what is going on around them." I won't lie and say it was my best suggestion, but it was the only thing I could think of and what helped me when I was trying to explain my abuse to the Ayobamis on Emeka's case and my parents.
"Hmm, that could work. Okay, good job, everyone; all your responses have been recorded and will be sent to the branch in Delta to be assisted." Mr. Tolu said this without a smile or emotion on his face, making me curious about this man.
"Hey, good one... I'm Gabriel," the man I had known to be Gabriel introduced himself as we came together to arrange our files.
"Thank you. I'm Darasimi," I replied with my introduction. I turned to see the lady who had smiled at me earlier holding out her hand for me.
"I'm Sarah, and this is David," she said, cut off by a groan. I took her hand just as the man beside her nudged her with his elbow.
"I'm capable of introducing myself; thank you very much. As this sheep said, I'm David. Nice to meet you," he said, with a smile, and held out his hand. I shook it and gave a small smile.
We went back to our cubicles and wrote a report on what we had done. We had a lunch break together, and after another two hours of training lectures, we all left.
Getting to the house after thirty minutes, I went straight to my room to rest, only to get a call from Yemi.
"Sooo, how was the interview?" I smiled at his tired voice, trying to sound excited.
"It went well, and I even started today," I explained, resting on my pillow.
"You do sound tired; what time do you get off work then?" I could tell he was yawning now because of the sound.
"At 4 p.m. It takes thirty minutes to get home, and my brain is tired from looking at cases all day, but I loved it. Everything about it was so exciting. What about you? I can tell you're still at work, right?" I asked because I could hear his tired voice.
"You guessed it right then. I just finished a conference meeting with the office in England, and I still have some paperwork to fill in." He explained, and I nodded even though he couldn't see me.
"Ooh, how did it go?" I didn't want to end the conversation because I missed his voice.
"It went well, although I would have to go for some important physical meetings with another top tech company for a contract that needs legal interference over the weekend."
"Oh, where is it being held, and when will you leave?" I couldn't help my voice from sounding concerned.
"The venue is at Lekki, and I leave Saturday morning since it would be at a party on Saturday evening, and I should be back on Sunday morning though. All I have to do is find a companion for the evening, as my assistant just gave birth," he sighed.
"That's too bad; it's like planned work." I laughed, and he sighed. I could tell he was frustrated.
"I do have an idea, but you might not like it." Uh oh, now I was nervous.
"Come with me." I was about to speak, but he cut me off.
As a friend, please, I really need your help. The branch has been very busy lately, and everyone is swamped with work. Please, please help me," he practically begged.
"Yemi, I can't. I'm not a secretary, so I wouldn't know what to do, plus there is Grace to worry about." I was coming up with excuses not to go because I wouldn't know what to expect.
"Dara, please help me just this once. You don't have to be a secretary; just be the lawyer you are since we'll need to take a look at the legal side of things anyway. Please, Dara, you're the only one I can ask this of." He begged again, making me sigh.
"I'll think about it, Yemi. I can't promise anything, though," I said because I really couldn't promise anything.
"Thank you. Just think about it, okay? So how is Grace?" He changed the topic.
"She's good; she went out with Mrs. Abayomi and her children. So, I'm technically alone since Mr. Ayo is in church." I explained the peace I was enjoying.
We talked for another thirty minutes about just anything and laughed at every other thing before hanging up.
The rumble in my stomach didn't go unnoticed, making him stand up and march into the kitchen to cook something for everyone as I thought about going with Yemi. It wasn't like I hadn't accompanied him to a party before, and we have gone out before, so there was nothing to think about except this feeling I have been trying to suppress. I was becoming so used to his presence and how comfortable I was with him. He could take my breath away, and I couldn't understand why my heart beat fast when I saw him and why I was sad when he said we should go as friends.
It wasn't like I was interested in him or liked him, right?
Right?
