"There will be a field operation from next week Tuesday, and you all are mandated to attend. It will be like training, only much more practical, as we will be going to court to see how judges rule and lawyers act. There will be a charity event next Friday as well to help raise funds for the recreational and rehabilitation center the foundation owns. So, I expect you all to be in order and punctual, as some questions may be asked when we attend the enlightenment lecture. You will also be writing a two-page report on how the field operation went. Is that understood?" Mr. Tolu's usual firm tone was met with our 'Yes, sir' before he went back to sticking his nose into yet another case file.
I sighed as I sat down on the chair that had wheels. I never knew the name, but you get it, right? Twirling myself in a circular motion, I held the case file that had been on my desk, now in my hand, as I attempted to read it, except I couldn't keep my mind away from the field operation. I wonder what the charity event would be like. Would we have to bring someone? If yes, then I better think of a way to invite Yemi. Praise would have loved it except she is majoring in private business law for big private business companies and not children and criminal law. Making a mental note to call her, I go back to the case in my hand.
Unlike the other cases we have reviewed, this was a rape case. In this case, a young girl of nine was raped by a Forty-five-year-old man. However, it is made known that this guy is one of the big guns in that community, which means he had the money and power to pay the fine or even make a light sentence. It states that the girl had told her mom everything when she was found bleeding out by the roadside while the man was still on top of her and was rushed to the hospital by some people who saw that she was still alive. The hospital found and diagnosed that it was indeed forceful penetration and unfortunately ruptured the vagina, causing trauma and injury, which led to excessive bleeding for such a young girl. She was also diagnosed with chlamydia from the rape but was fortunate enough to be brought in early to be treated. The culprit, however, was known to own a couple of buildings that he rents out as part of his business. The culprit was in a detention holding cell while the investigation was being carried out.
"I assume we know the drill. You guys have fifteen minutes to discuss and bring forth a solution," Mr. Tolu said, and we all quickly moved to the table we had set in the middle of the room for our discussions. It didn't take long to bring our ideas together, as everyone agreed on the solutions, so, after fifteen minutes, our team leader, Gabriel, spoke.
"We boldly see that it's a rape case and the culprit was caught in the act with so many witnesses; however, he has not been put in jail yet because of his reputation and the investigation to see whether it was consensual or not. The young girl is now in the hospital battling for her life against trauma, injury, and sexually transmitted infections. We, as the defendant, would plead for the court to find the culprit guilty and sentence him to the full punishment as stated in the code act: life imprisonment." He stopped his briefing as I continued.
"It is written in the Criminal Code Act, section 358, that 'Any person who commits the offense of rape is liable to imprisonment for life, with or without caning.' Again, Section 283 of the Penal Code Act provides that "whoever commits rape shall be punished with imprisonment for life and any lesser term and shall also be liable to a fine. It's the same thing for the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, 2015, which says, 'A person convicted of an offense of rape is liable to life imprisonment. All these codes were set up for a reason, and the three of them specify the action against such culprits. We need to ascertain that the jury and the judge are with us by saying, 'Are we as the citizens and people who have the authority to bring justice just going to let the culprit walk away just because he has a little power? If we do that, are we not less of a man than he is?" Taking a pause, I let what I just said sink in before letting Esther continue.
"The culprit may have power but he also has businesses, which is why I think the police should also investigate his buildings and question his tenants, because I'm sure that if a man is capable of doing such an act without fear, then he must have done some wrong dealings in his business and even maybe to his tenants." She said it like it was rehearsed, and I have to say, I loved our cooperation.
"So, you're saying this man must have some traces of wrong dealings?" Mr. Tolu said to clarify.
"We are saying the police need to dig up the dirt the culprit is hiding. You never know; this might not be his first case. We need to get the ultimate punishment for someone like him who was in his right mind committing such a crime, so an accumulation of cases and wrongdoings may be enough to put him behind bars for life," David concluded, while Mr. Tolu nodded, looking satisfied.
"Good work, everyone; your cooperation is uncanny, and your ideas are welcome. Like other times, your response has been recorded and will be sent to the lawyer in charge of the case." He said with a satisfied look. We all turned to each other, giving ourselves a high-five before continuing to talk about the case.
Author's note
Like I said in the previous chapter, I am not a lawyer, nor do I know anything about law, but I have tried my best to do research, and I'm pretty sure all the codes, acts, and violence stuff are all facts.
Also, who knows what's up with Dara's feelings?
An important question: "Who here loves food like me?" Food is like the main character; it is my first love, and God is my true love, so, yeah, I'm a foodie as much as I am a wordie. Do you get that? No, well, your loss (evil laugh).
I'm just loving each chapter, but stay tuned as it gets sweeter, hotter, and more surprising.
Okay, final question: What did you guys observe, learn, or notice about this chapter?
Please share your thoughts in the comment section as you so faithfully and lovingly like and follow the story.
I love and appreciate you guys... Later.
