I may have underestimated Mrs. Coker's definition of pampering. I had always heard of getting waxed and pedicures and all, but never had I expected it to be so painful or proddy. My entire body still felt the many hands that had touched it.
First, we went to get food, then a massage, which was nice at first until the pounding began. I think I'd much rather have a massage chair than go to a massage. After the massage, we went to the mall to get outfits for Yemi's concert this evening. That was right! I slept off as soon as we got home last night, well after giving Yemi all the gist and watching him laugh at me.
I sighed as I took in the beautiful garden in the backyard of Coker's home. The weather was a bit chilly, but not cold enough to have on too many layers of clothes. Yemi wasn't home because being an artist and holding a concert meant preparations. I had no idea how long I had been outside, but it was too calm to pass off.
"I somehow knew you'd be here. What are you doing out in the cold?" Mrs. Coker asked from behind me.
I turned to the beautiful woman and smiled before turning my focus back to the white roses by the fountain.
"I was just admiring. It is beautiful." I replied softly, and I heard her hum.
"Jeremy and I had this place cultivated by ourselves. It was one of the ways we loved to spend time together, especially when the kids weren't home." She explained and I nodded.
"I sure would love something like this," I said and breathed out, wrapping my arms around myself.
"Your daughter! What is she like?" She asked and my eyes widened because although I knew she knew I had a child, no one ever brought it up. I looked at her for a few seconds trying to see if there was any malicious thought behind them but I just saw plain curiosity. Guess it ran in the family.
"Her name is Grace and she's eleven years old. I had her when I was so young, so people think she's my little sister. She has dark hair like mine, but she is so beautiful. She is also very smart and intelligent. She's very cautious but also carefree. She's an entire package but also a spitfire." I replied with a chuckle.
"She sounds lovely. I, no, we would love to meet her." Mrs. Coker said while smiling. I nodded and watched her draw closer to me and put her hands on my shoulders.
"I have an idea of what you may have gone through, and I want you to know that you are brave and strong and that you never have to feel insufficient amongst us because whether you like it or not, we already love you, and my son loves you as well. You can always talk to me about anything at all. Do you understand me, dear?" She asked with compassion flooding her eyes. I tried to blink back the tears, but some fell, and before I knew it, I was being hauled into her embrace.
I had never expected this from her or anyone aside from Yemi, for that matter, but here I was with someone other than him or Pastor Ayo comforting me.
It felt good.
"Thank you, ma'am," I replied in a small voice as I hugged her back.
She pulled away from me gently but still held my hands.
"C'mon, we have to get ready. The concert starts in a few hours, and it's a long drive to the venue." She said, pulling me gently into the house.
We walked to my room only to find Lola waiting by the door. She smiled when she saw us.
"Where have you guys been? The concert starts very very soon and we're still not dressed." Lola whined.
"Oh, stop your whining, Lola. I swear you're just as impatient as your father." Mrs. Coker huffed, making me chuckle. Lola pouted at her mom but snapped out of it immediately and came to pull me away.
"C'mon Dara, let me help you get dressed." She said, and we walked into the room.
She left my side once we were inside and walked to my closet, raking through my clothes.
"So, what are you wearing?" She asked while I walked to her and picked out one of the clothes we had bought yesterday.
"No. That looks too simple," she criticized and scrunched her nose in the blue knee-length flowing gown I was holding.
"What's wrong with this one?" I asked with a pout, but she just shook her head and went back to raking my closet.
"Why not have a shower, while I find something cool for you and no arguments," she said in a firm tone, which made me question how old the girl was.
"Yes, ma'am," I complied and walked into the bathroom.
I took a quick shower and brushed my teeth again before walking out to see that Lola had already arranged the clothes on the bed. I walked towards the bed, and okay, I gotta hand it to her, it was a far better choice than the one I picked out before.
"You can pair the outfit with these," Lola said, holding out a pair of black Converse.
I nodded and put on brown cargo pants, a white fitted round neck top, and completed it with a matching cargo jacket.
"You haven't even done your hair and makeup, and you already look stunning." She complimented.
"Thank you," I replied, but she just playfully waved it.
She pulled me to the chair in front of the mirror and started prodding the braids that I had made during our day out. By the time she was done, I was staring at a whole new version of me.
"Girl, you are good at this. I look amazing." I complimented her, but she just grinned.
