Thankfully, I was able to get through breakfast, and now, I was in my room wanting to change since Yemi's mum already had plans for us. I wore my hoodie over my white shirt and black jeans since it was cold out. I was about to wear my sneakers when a knock came in.
"Come in," I yelled from inside the closet. I heard the door open and close as I wore my sneakers and stepped out.
"Hey," Yemi said softly as he sat on the small couch at the foot of my bed. I smiled at his appearance. He was only wearing shorts and a white polo but still managed to look so good.
"Hi," I replied and walked over to sit beside him. He re-adjusted himself so his legs were on either side of the couch, and my back was to him. He pulled me closer so my back was touching his chest, and his arms were wrapped around my stomach.
"So, that was intense," he spoke softly to my ears, making me shiver at our nearness.
"Yeah, the wedding talk I can deal with, but babies, Grace is going to freak," I replied in a light-hearted tone as I placed my hands around his.
"Grace, or you?" I sucked in a breath at his accusation because he was right.
"I'm sure I'll be ready when the time comes," I said instead of ranting at how I hadn't given much thought to getting pregnant again.
"What was it like? Carrying Grace at a young age?" I knew he was asking out of concern and curiosity, but I couldn't help the bitter feeling that pulsed through me, making me sigh.
"Painful. I was only thirteen and my body had just started to develop, so I felt every stretch whenever Grace grew within me. I wasn't allowed to just lobby around, so I felt so much pain working and carrying a baby," I explained softly. I didn't feel hatred for that time of my life anymore. I have accepted it.
"What about after?" he asked and placed a small kiss on the corner of my head. I was shorter than him even while seated.
"Hmm, I didn't have that much time to feel relieved because he raped me the day after again. My body hadn't fully healed because they practically cut her out of me. I bled out for a long time before I was able to stop it by pushing out the placenta. I just knew I didn't want to give birth like that again. I always drank a concoction he would give his concubines to flush out, so I wouldn't get pregnant." My voice had turned small as I explained, and I noticed his grip tightened on me. I didn't cry. I couldn't, it was over.
"What about now? Do you want another child?" he asked in a small voice that showed he was scared of my response. So, I released myself from his grip and turned to face him. His beautiful face held apprehension.
"Of course, I do. We can go to the hospital and run some tests to see if I'm fully capable of carrying a baby. I'm sure Grace would be excited to have a sibling because I am," I said every word staring into his eyes, and I could see relief wash over him.
"I love you," his words were jumbled like he was holding back a sob.
"I love you more," I replied and gave him a lingering kiss.
A knock on the door broke us apart.
"Sorry to interrupt, but Dara, Mum said we should leave now," Lola said, making me remember I was on my way out in the first place. I quickly stood up, got my phone, and rushed to the door with Yemi in tow.
"Let's go," I said once I opened the door to see Lola pressing her phone. I was about to leave when I was held back by Yemi.
"Have fun, okay?" he whispered and kissed me again before letting me go.
We got downstairs to see Mrs. Coker talking to the man who welcomed Yemi and me home yesterday.
"Oh, fantastic, you're ready. Nicholas is waiting for us," she said when she saw us. Nicholas?
"He's the driver," Lola whispered, making me nod as we walked outside the beautiful house.
"So, we are going to get ourselves pampered today. First, a spa date, then manicures and pedicures, and then our hair, and then shopping," Mrs. Coker listed while I just followed them into the black SUV waiting outside.
"Sounds like fun?" I replied hesitantly before looking at Lola to make sense of anything.
"More like torture. The only thing you enjoy is the spa date, the rest is just prodding and pulling," Lola explained with a nasty look on her face.
"Don't scare her away, Lola. The only thing you like is anything food," her mum said, rolling her eyes, and that was when I noticed her outfit.
For a woman her age, she sure seemed to love wearing clothes that brought out her beauty. She was wearing a long-sleeved, white floral gown that flowed to her ankle and was held together at the waist with a platinum belt. Her silver stud earrings and watch were the only pieces of jewelry on her.
I wondered what she would do once she found out that I was just like her daughter who loves food.
"Just feed us more today before the prodding begins. Not for my sake, but for your soon-to-be daughter-in-law," Lola replied while holding on to me like I was her savior. Mrs. Coker had a look of understanding on her face, and she nodded,
"You're right," she said making Lola squeal, and honestly, I was squealing on the inside too.
This shouldn't be so bad.
