My mouth hung open as I turned my gaze to Yemi, who was already standing up and chuckling at my expression. He walked to the stage and took a seat behind a big piano hidden by the backlight.
He brought the microphone closer to him and looked up, staring right at me. I felt my heart jump as he smiled. I watched carefully as he placed his hands on the piano and effortlessly moved them on the keys.
The sound filled the room, and soon, he started singing. He was singing JIREH.
His voice was so soft that it captured everyone's attention, and the lyrics were so meaningful that I understood why he chose them for this event.
I'm going through a storm, but I won't go down
I hear your voice
I carried in the rhythm of the wind to call me out
You would cross an ocean so I wouldn't drown
You've never been closer than you are right now
He sang for the people who were going through many difficulties in those small rural areas. Those children grow up not knowing they were left alone in the world, for those who couldn't afford anything.
He was singing to give hope to the people who needed it. I couldn't help but sing along as his eyes never left mine. He smiled, seeing that I was singing along.
Jireh, Jireh... you are enough
Jireh, Jireh, you are enough
I will be content in every circumstance
Jireh, you are enough
He was singing for those who thought they could never be satisfied with whatever they had. He sang for those who had nothing but encouraged them to be content and told them that everything would be fine.
My life may not have been the sweetest or even nicest, but I knew God had a plan and still did. I might want to change a few things, like the pain and hurt, but without it, I wouldn't have been this strong. I knew the situation, and some storms I faced may not always be the devil against me, but it was God showing me what it would be like if he were for me.
I thought about my parents and how they would force me to do things I never could or about my ex-husband, who would beat me instead of talking. Thinking about all that, I felt nothing but peace. I had my daughter suffer from that pain, and I loved her so much. I also met Yemi. His support, care, advice, and help have made me improve so much. I knew one thing for sure.
I was grateful for him being in my life, and without a beat, he was creeping so quickly into my heart.
"Thank you," I mouthed to Yemi, who simply smiled and ended his song.
Cheers erupted from the crown, and I stood up, clapping my hands and cheering as well. He bowed his head a little and walked off the stage towards me.
He pulled me into a hug once he got near, making me tense a bit, and then I relaxed. I hugged him back and patted his back.
"God would be so proud of you," I whispered, and I felt him tighten his hold.
"And he would be of you." He said it, looking me in the eye as we separated, and I just knew he meant it. I smiled and remembered something important.
"The food is getting cold!" I exclaimed and rushed back to the table where our food had been served.
"I wonder where all the food you eat goes," Yemi said, chuckling, while I just stuck out my tongue to him before taking another spoon full of jollof rice.
