"We have another one" Van shouted over the grunts and screams, gaining the attention of the group. They gathered around the scene, all watching with unsettling excitement.
"What happened this time?" Tai dared to ask, leaning close to Van. She had yet to see who was fighting, numb to the violet outbursts of Shauna Shipman.
"Mari made a comment about Shauna and Y/N just lost it" Nat overheard the conversation, standing mere steps away. "That's Y/N?" Tai and Nat asked in unison, exchanging a look of shock. Their eyes followed the commotion, as the two fought for dominance. It was highly unlikely for you to initiate a fight, they barely ever heard you yell. So they could only imagine the surprise Mari felt when you pulled her to the ground.
Mari screamed, using the momentum in her legs kick you off. It was no use, the sheer force weighted on her shoulders was holding her in place. "Let me go" she shouted, her legs continued to kick. Her eyes frantically fluttered between the others, searching for help that never came. A frustrated groan escaped her lips, surprised by the strength you possessed. Her last resort was to distract you by doing what she does best, running her mouth.
"You're just like her" her voice clear, the confidence was alarming. Her words helped draw you closer, close enough that she dealt a heavy blow with her forehead. It connected with your cheek bone causing you to lean back in pain. Mari took advantage of your surprise to flip the positions, landing on top of you. Her fist landed the next blow, splitting your lip in the process. A cocky smily twitched upon her lips, raising her hand for another swing.
What she didn't expect, was for you to move faster then her. In a split second, you had a firm hold of her hair, tearing her off you. A strangled yelp was heard before Mari's back hit the ground once again. Your hand shifted in her hand, grabbing ahold of the top of her head. You tugged harshly before slamming her head into the hard ground.
"Should we intervene?" Tai asked, uncertain how to handle this behaviour. Van turned to face her, her answer already dancing on her tongue. "Fuck no, Shauna would kill us if we touched them" Tai nodded in agreement, turning her attention on the fight. She wondered when Shauna would intervene, if she would. Tai believed that Shauna was most likely getting off on the view and who was she to ruin that?
You raised your fist, landing a punch to Mari's nose. It crunched under the pressure, blood coating your hand. Then another, aiming for her eye, followed by a knee to her side. Which lead to the final hit, raising your arm to finish the fight, to finally muzzle Mari for good. Yet it never came, your arm was suspended in the air, held tightly by another. You craned your neck to protest, when Shauna came into view. The words dried in your throat and a nervous flutter started in your stomach. Shauna's eyes conveyed her emotions, angry, disappointed and unimpressed. That was all that was needed before she yanked you onto your feet. She then proceeded to huff and drag you towards your hut without a word. This unsettled you more.
When the makeshift door closed behind you, Shauna tossed you further into the hut. You stumbled, regaining your balance. "What the fuck was that?" She spat, nostrils flared and fire in her eyes. She was beyond angry leaving no room for a light hearted moment. She stalked forward, impatient with the silence. She grabbed your chin harshly, squeezing hard enough for your teeth to dig into your cheek. "Speak!" She demanded, each second unanswered offer more pressure around your jaw.
"She called you a monster, a heartless killing machine, she deserved it" in contrast, your voice was quieter, less aggressive. A twinge of a smile ghosted her lips but as soon as it appeared, it evaporated. It was enough to show she wasn't truly mad, not really. It's just not in your nature to argue, let alone get physical. So she understood that you meant well, that if the time comes, you'll have her back no matter what.
Her grip on your chin loosened, freeing you from her grasp. Instinctively, your hand rubbed at the soon to bruise area. Shauna's demeanour soften by only a fraction at your movement. "I don't need you to defend me" it was cold and distant, after the wilderness she's not accustomed to acts of kindness. You recognised her state immediately, stepping closer to bridge the space between you. "I know" two words that conveyed so much, recognised her as a human, not a monster.
"Don't ever do it again, do you understand?" They was little bite to her words, she wasn't angry that you resorted to violence. She was scared that if this continued, that she would lose you like everything else she loved. If she had to be the person that screamed, yelled and broke bones then she would, if it meant that you didn't have to.
You nodded, wrapping your arms around her waist. Shauna rested her head upon your shoulder, pulling you closer to her body. It was these moments of vulnerability that had you falling for her, wanting to defend her with the fight you had left. She wasn't some monster, she just needed someone to show her kindness. Affirm that buried beneath the heartache, grief and self destruction that there is humanity left.
The vulnerability was brief as Shauna moved fast as she dropped her arms and grabbed hold of your wrist. She had moved to the next, not wanting to dwell on this heartfelt moment. She marched to the entrance of the hut, dragging you along behind her. She continued her path towards Mari who was being tended to by the camp. Mari's eyes blew wide at the sight of Shauna, fearing that a round two would begin. Shauna stopped a few feet away from the group, using her arm to throw you towards them. You turned to face Shauna, looking to her for guidance to her erratic behaviour. She raised her brow, expecting for you to know exactly what she wants. After shrugging your shoulders, she groaned at your stupidity.
"Apologise" another one word demand, however this time, it came out of nowhere. The idea was so foreign that it took a second to sink in her request. "Are you fucking kidding me?" was your reply, like hell were you apologising to Mari. She started it, she deserved to be attack with the way she described Shauna. The fact that Shauna was under the impression that you would, was wild to you.
"Does it look like I'm kidding? Fucking apologise to her" Even Nat was surprised by the sudden change of heart. The entire camp grew quiet at the scene, all sitting on the edge of their seat. It was unusual for you to start fights, it was even more rare for Shauna Shipman to apologise. The words 'I'm sorry' were not in her vocabulary, never have been and she has the audacity to ask that of you.
"No" you rebutted, confident in where you stand. She does not deserve sympathy or an apology. Shauna's nostrils flared as she stepped forward which provoked a shake of your head. Another step was taken, this time he hand rested on the knife she keeps on her at all time. "Fine" you resigned, a sigh passing through your lips. It wasn't that Shauna scared you, it was that you were too tired to go back and forth. The tussle with Mari was already too much physical exertion for the day.
"I'm sorry" you spoke, body still facing Shauna. "Not to me, to her" Shauna pointed for dramatic effect, a sly smile twitching as she watched your body slowly turn. "I'm sorry" you mumbled, hoping that it would be enough. "Speak up, I can't fucking hear you" she yelled, wanting nothing more than embarrass you. "Fuck, fine. I'm sorry" Mari couldn't keep her attention to one person, her eyes darted between you and Shauna. She couldn't tell if this was a fever dream from the beating she received or real life. It was hard to tell these days.
Shauna's boots crunched the ground beneath her feet, approaching you with determination. Her hand hooked under your arm, spinning you to face her. The action caught you by surprise, eliciting a gasp. She proceeded to use the momentum to toss you towards the hut. "Go now" she commented in a sickly sweet tone. A shiver passed through your spine, not for you but for whatever or whoever comes next.
Shauna watched your presence retreat back into the hut before turning on her heels. She took strides towards Mari, leaning down close to her face. A beat passed before either blinked, one scared to move while the other calculated her next step. Shauna raised her fist before landing a solid punch to Mari's already swollen face. "Don't ever touch them again" was spoken with enough venom to cause Mari to crawl backwards. She wanted to make enough space to keep Shauna at a distance.
Shauna appreciated the attempt, knowing that distance wouldn't stop her from the hunt. Her message was conveyed loud and clear - 'they're untouchable'. That was all Shauna needed before she followed your path back to the hut, smug with the way the day had turned out.
