I dreamed about home, back in Minnesota. I dreamed about my parents, I wondered what my aunt was up to these days. I’d have to call her if I wake up. And then I remembered the night when Ryan took me to the park on a date, I remembered him running and jumping into the cold fountain of water, the laughing and smiling. I was glad this was all behind me finally. No more Nathan and Ashley, no more fear or worry.

Whoa, I could hear people talking, was I still unconscious though? It was silent again, except for an all too familiar steady beep which told me I was in a hospital. The air was cool, but it felt good on my sensitive skin. My arm throbbed reminding me of what Nathan did to it.

When I first opened my eyes my vision was blurry, which scared me to death, I could not be blind! But then the white room came into focus and I saw the stale cream colored sheets over me, my arm wrapped in thick gauze, bruises that were shades of purple and blue… I didn’t even want to thing of what my face looked like.

Then to my left was Ryan, sleeping in a chair. His arm was in a cast, the skin around his right eye a grayish-blue. A few cuts and bruises also, but he looked in better shape than me which I was thankful for. He looked uncomfortable and tired, like he’d been in that chair for eternity, his hair was snarly but his clothes looked fresh, not the ones from the night of the studio party.

Suddenly Molly walked in talking to a nurse, unaware I was awake until she saw me.

“Eleanor! Oh my god, you’re awake! Oh, I was so worried!” she wailed, throwing her arms around me. Ryan had a spasm in his chair, almost falling because Molly disturbed the silence.

“Sorry babe,” she smiled, over-excited and eager, like a switch had been flipped on.

I looked over at Ryan and watched him get up, locking eyes with him. His grin showed relief and love and happiness. Of course I teared up, I was so grateful I was okay, that he was okay. He came over to me slowly, examining me like he thought it was too good to be true I was alive. He looked at me like I was gold, which made me giggle. After all this, he still looks at me like I’m a princess.

His big arms gently wrapped around my frame, “I was so scared,” he whispered, voice cracking sounding like a scared little innocent boy.

“I’m so sorry,” I whimpered.

“It’s all over though, you’re safe that’s what counts, we can be together… god I’ve missed you,” he sobbed.

“Ryan,” I say, but I can’t find any words to describe the amount of relief I feel.

“Eleanor, you’re awake, how are you feeling?” A nurse walked into the room and came to the end of my bed, scribbling on a clipboard.

“I’m okay.”

“Well if you’re feeling up to it and if you have a place to go where you are well cared for, you can leave this afternoon,” she said.

I thought a comfy couch full of blankets with ice cream was better than stale sheets and hospital food.

“I think I can head home,” I smiled. Ryan smiled also squeezing my hand.

Soon enough I’m wrapped in fluffy blankets and snuggled in pillows. Ryan sits next to me and even though I’m sore and scarred, I’m more hopeful and excited than anything. Excited to actually live my life with my friends and Ryan without constantly having to look over my shoulder.

Ryan kisses my cheek softly to get my attention. I nod my head towards him, we’re face to face.

“I love you so much baby,” he breathed.

“I love you too,” I giggle and then our lips meet and it feels like the first time because it’s been so long since I felt his lips on mine. He smiles between kisses and I fall asleep on my couch with my wonderful boyfriend, ready for whatever adventure life is going to bring me…
