CHAPTER FIFTY EIGHT.
DUBAI.
(tw: mentions domestic abuse and rape!)
The Abu Dhabi victory felt like it had happened in another lifetime. For Charles, it had been a culmination— a championship, a final race with his dream car, a love declared in front of the world. For Dariyah, it had been a brief, bright respite.
But some wounds demanded their own endings.
The morning of the trial— the day she never thought would come— dawned grey and heavy, the sky over Dubai mirroring the heaviness in her chest.
The courtroom loomed ahead: modern glass walls, sterile corridors, the quiet hush of proceedings underway. Eve try step closer felt like her legs were turning to iron.
Fifteen years. Fifteen years of secrets pressed under her ribs. Of bruises she'd hidden. Of shame that had never belonged to her.
And finally, it was ending.
Charles walked beside her, hand warm and solid in hers. He didn't speak— didn't need to. His thumb traced over the diamond on her ring finder, a silent reminder: You are not alone.
Inside, her mother, Alisha, sat near the front along with her boss— Layla— all dressed up in her lawyer fit. Yes, she was their lawyer and it was all agreed upon her request. Alisha's hands were twisted in her lap. Her face was pale, but her chin lifted when she saw Dariyah. Even now, even after everything, she tried to be strong for her daughter.
Beside the to-be-married couple sat Dariyah's sister and brother-in-law— Sameeha placed a comforting hand on Dariyah's tensed up shoulders— offering her little sister a small smile. Faraz— her brother-in-law, playfully bumped his fist with hers in a means of support, causing Dariyah to smile a bit at the interaction.
The courtroom filled slowly. Lawyers arranging files. A few reporters from the national press. Some officers standing near the defendant's box. And finally— he entered.
There he was— her stepfather.
Older. Greyer. But his eyes hadn't changed. Cold. Contemptuous.
For a second— just one awful heartbeat— she was sixteen again, locked in that small dark bedroom. She heard the latch click behind her, felt the carpet burn her skin, felt her voice go hoarse from screaming.
Her breath caught. The edges of her vision blurred.
Charles turned, his hands cupping her face, voice low and steady.
"Hey. Look at me."
Her eyes snapped up to his.
"You are not there anymore," he said. His thumb brushed her cheek. "You are here. You survived. You are stronger than he will ever be."
She nodded, a shiver rolling through her, but she held onto his wrists like they were the only thing tethering her to earth.
When the judge finally entered and everyone rose, Dariyah took her seat. She didn't look at her stepfather again. She focused on her advocate. On her mother's quiet presence. On Charles sitting just behind her, hands folded, watching every second with eyes that promised retribution.
