Dean had been lighter these days, not happy-happy—he wasn't built or raised that way—but lighter.
His shoulders didn't bow quite so heavy, his laugh didn't catch in his throat like it used to, and Cas had caught him humming once, over a frying pan of bacon, it was enough to make Cas ache with something warm and terrible all at once.
Ever since they'd found their way to each other, Dean had let more of himself show, more softness, more cracks.
Cas had watched over him since childhood, but only now did he realize how much of Dean had been hidden—buried under John's voice, John's fists, John's shadow.
And when Cas had learned the full weight of what John had done to his son, the fury had been blinding.
He had marched into Heaven with purpose, wings rattling the silver gates, and demanded John Winchester's soul for five minutes. Just five. Long enough.
Jack had refused. Cas hadn't argued, he knew what he would have done, and so did Jack, but the desire hadn't left him.
It curled inside him, patient, sharp-edged, everyone thought angels only killed clean, quick, merciful.
Soldiers of God, but soldiers had been perfecting pain since the first war in Heaven, demons had learned it from them.
And Cas had been waiting, but he had loved Dean more than that, and they had slipped into more domestic moments from then onwards.
Today was another day where Cas, Eileen and Sam made lunch and Dean was clinging onto Cas from behind never letting him go once.
"Honey, I need to cook", Cas said laughing and Sam had smiled, he loved seeing his brother this happy and relaxed.
He had even stopped drinking beer, not fully, but reduced a lot, his record was currently 48 hours and going.
"Hey, I'm not stopping you", Dean muttered in Cas' neck, "Yeah, but you are not helping me either", Cas countered.
"How about you two go to the library and just talk to each other, clearly Dean needs you now Cas, we'll finish up, you already did most of the work", Eileen said signing and Cas looked at his love and nodded sighing.
They both walked to the library hand-in-hand and Dean sat down pulling Cas on top of his lap, "I'm a full Angel, my weight might crush you", Cas said.
"You won't", Dean said and it was true, Cas has always let Dean push and pull him anywhere, "What's wrong love?", Cas asked stroking Dean's hair softly and he closed his eyes and hugged Cas close leaning on him.
"I can't believe you are here and I can't believe we can be like this", Dean replied and Cas smiled and kissed his head.
He went to reply when there was a bright light and he shielded Dean in his arms, as soon as the light receded he got up with his blade in his hands and Dean also got up.
They were both shocked to see who it was and immediately Dean held Cas's arms restraining him.
"Dean?", said John Winchester, Sam and Eileen rushed in hearing the commotion, "Dad?", Sam asked surprised.
"What is going on here? Where am I?", John asked, "What date is it today dad?", Sam asked practically.
"May 18th, 2004", John replied and Dean's face hardened, the date that Cas died because of Lucifer, not the year, but still.
"You are in the future dad", Sam said and started explaining without spoiling too much and Cas turned to see Dean going into a panic attack.
He held Dean and made him sit, "Hey, honey, I'm here, I'm next to you and I love you",he whispered and started passing warm grace to his love, for comfort.
"Why is he here?", Dean asked, "I don't know love, I can find out, but that means I have to leave you", Cas and Dean shook his head and buried himself against Cas, who stroked along his spine in gentle circles, anchoring him.
"What the hell is going on here?", John asked and Cas pulled away his eyes glowing, "No Cas, don't", Dean quickly said and Cas took a deep breath and got up his eyes going back to normal.
John stepped towards Dean and Cas's body moved before Dean could even blink—his frame a solid wall between father and son, "Who are you to stop me from walking towards my boy?", he asked.
"You're a cold-hearted bitch who ripped his heart out, I watched him struggle for years to overcome the damage you did and there's no way I'm going to just let you wheel him back in so you can do it all over again", Cas said and Dean looked at Cas with the fondest look ever.
"What the hell are you talking about?", John asked and Cas chuckled dryly, "I don't get why the Angels chose you as their father", Cas said.
"First of all who the fuck are you?", John asked, "I am Castiel, Angel of the Lord and-", he stopped, he couldn't claim Dean, not in front of John, he can't do that.
"My husband", Dean breathed and everyone looked at him in shock, Cas has been back for less than a year and they never talked about marriage even, but Dean was saying this.
"Dean?", Cas asked and Dean nodded, "We don't need vows, we don't need rings, we can't officiate, you don't exist and I am dead to the government, but ever since you pulled me out of hell and claimed me, we have been married", Dean said and Cas smiled softly.
"You are- a man? it isn't right", John said advancing Dean and Cas stopped him, John didn't hesitate—he drew the Colt and fired point-blank.
The bullet struck Cas in the chest. He didn't flinch. Didn't stagger. He only blinked, tilting his head with something between curiosity and disdain.
Dean's hand clutched Cas's sleeve, trembling, Cas lifted his chin, eyes narrowing on John Winchester, and for the first time, John looked like he was the one about to break.
"I spent years trying to change your son, show your son he is loved unconditionally, I am not going to let you break that down in a second John Winchester, you are not supposed to be here", Cas spoke and heaven spoke with him.
"What are you gonna do? Kill me?", John asked and Cas tilted his head, his whole body vibrating with anger, "I would love to smite you, but you are needed to get my Dean to me", Cas said and John raised the colt again.
"Dad stop", Sam said, "Eileen go inside", Cas said his body starting to glow and she obeyed although she had questions.
Sam looked at his wife leave and looked at Cas who gave him a look and Sam rushed forward and pushed Dean with him to the floor.
Cas blasted the room in grace, it wasn't painful, it was warm, but searingly bright and when the brothers got up John was gone.
"What did you do Cas?", Dean asked, "I sent him back to his time, no harm done, just erased his memory", Cas said and Eileen came in.
"Why did you send me out?", Eileen said signing, "My grace is not good for the baby", Cas said and all three looked at him shocked.
"Baby?", Sam asked, "Yeah, I thought you knew", Cas said in the most Cas way possible and Sam and Eileen looked at each other.
"Congratulations", Dean said breaking the silence, his eyes shining, Sam walked towards Eileen and scooped her in his arms, the newest parents celebrating their newest happiness.
A new Winchester after a long time, Dean smiled and moved into Cas's arms, "Thank you for telling them the greatest news", he said and Cas smiled and kissed his temple.
"And thank you for calling me your husband", he said, "You are", Dean said and they looked at each other and quickly kissed.
"Ok, celebration!!", Dean said breaking from the kiss and as he leaned into Cas's arms, surrounded by family and the promise of new life, he realized for the first time in forever, he wasn't just surviving—he was home.
The house filled with laughter, warm and unshakable, as if Heaven itself had decided—finally—that the Winchesters had earned their peace.
