Dean walked into the kitchen to see Sam drinking his coffee while reading a book, "Morning, nerd", Dean said, smirking and walking towards the coffee pot.
"Shut up", Sam replied, "Oooh somebody's grumpy, let me ask Cas to fix that", Dean said and glanced toward the doorway, half-expecting the angel to just... appear.
"Speaking of Cas—where is he?", Sam asked, finally looking up, "What do you mean, where is he? You woke up first. You should've seen him wandering around by now. You know—being weird", Dean asked, a frown appearing on his face.
Sam raised an eyebrow, but shook his head, "Nope haven't seen him since, let's see, yes after dinner", Sam said and Dean stiffened.
"I left you two", he started continuing, "Yes, but I went to sleep soon after that, Cas was here", Dean interrupted not letting his brother turn this into that kind of conversation.
"He wasn't in your room?", Sam asked a evil smile forming on his face, "No, why would he be in my room?", Dean asked.
"Well he always watches over you, especially when you sleep so that you don't have any nightmares", Sam replied.
For just a second, Dean's expression softened—something unguarded flickering across his face, then it vanished, replaced by a scowl, "That's creepy and no, when I woke he wasn't in my room at all", Dean said, a slow fear starting to creep in.
The unease settled in slowly, heavy and unwelcome, "Well maybe he went to heaven, to check on things", Sam suggested.
Dean grabbed his mug a little harder than necessary, "Nope, he wouldn't leave without telling me, telling us", Dean said taking his coffee mug with him and walking out.
Sam followed him, "He doesn't exactly need to tell you Dean, he is not your husband, or boyfriend or-", he said.
"Yeah, yeah shut up Dr. Phil, he's my best friend", Dean said stopping in front of Cas's room, "Yeah keep telling yourself that", Sam said as Dean knocked on the door.
"Cas?", he called, "Buddy, you in there?", Dean asked again getting no replies and Sam raised an eyebrow.
"If anyone should be calling him buddy it should be me", Sam said and Dean decided to ignore his brother and opened the door.
"You know you two are practically married right? Like without the rings and se-", Sam stopped and Dean also looked in the room.
What caught his sight made the cup of coffee in his hands slip, shattering on the floor as he quickly rushed to the bedside.
Cas looked asleep, with a faint smile on his face — but worry gripped Dean hard, he is an Angel — Angels don't sleep, was his only thought.
Dean's chest tightened until he barely knew what he was doing anymore or what was happening around him.
He shook Cas lightly, "Cas, wake up", he said softly, his voice nearly breaking, "Maybe he is tired and so he is sleeping to regain his strength", Sam said by Cas's feet, but Dean shook his head.
"You know all the angels fell Dean. And even though if they are all back in heaven, they are not as strong as they used to", Sam tried reasoning, but he sounded more unsure, like he didn't believe his own words.
"Cas is the most powerful angel on Earth right now, Sam. Even Chuck said so", Dean said his face stoic as he looked at his brother, but his eyes told a different story altogether.
"Ok, there is no need to panic, I'll check some lore book, nothing could've gotten into the bunker", Sam said but Dean didn't hear a thing.
He looked at Cas, he knew Cas, every line, every frown, every smile, how his face turns when he is annoyed, how he looks when Dean says something incredibly stupid — not angry, or irritated, but with a smile, like a fond smile, if that is what it is.
But he has never seen Cas this peaceful, with no trace of worry or lines on his face, "What have you done Cas?", he whispered, his eyes burned, but he blinked it away.
The funny thing was Cas looked the same, the trench coat, the tie askew, his messy jet black hair, nothing was different, except the fact he was not awake.
Sam came in with a book and stopped short at the sight of Dean holding Cas's hand, like he was praying, "Uh, Dean?", he called his voice mixed with shock and confusion, "Did you find something Sammy?", Dean asked not looking away from Cas.
"Uhm... yeah, sort of, it seems like Cas did this to himself", Sam said and that made Dean look away from Cas and at Sam.
"What?", he asked, not removing his hand away from Cas', "Yeah there is a spell here that puts an angel into a deep sleep—bound to a dream of their choosing", Sam said and suddenly, it felt like all the air had been ripped from Dean's lungs.
"Why—how can we get him out?", Dean asked, looking back at Cas, he needs to keep his priorities straight right now.
"Someone has to go into his dream and make him kill his dream", Sam replied, "Why? Can't it be anyone else?", Dean asked, knowing that whatever is making Cas peaceful would make him miserable if was the one who is supposed to kill it.
"One can, but he will come back as a human, a dying human, his grace would burn through his life force—trapped in his subconscious", Sam said after reading the lore quickly.
Dean squeezed his eye shut, a single tear slipping out, "Besides even if he kills, he won't forget the dream. Or what it felt like", Sam tried reassuring.
"Fine, I'll go in", Dean said wiping his tear and getting up, but not letting go of Cas's hand, scared that he might actually slip away.
"No", Sam said, one word, but it sounded final, Dean frowned, anger slowly creeping in and Sam raised his hand.
"You shouted at him 2 days ago Dean, if you go in now, you will again shout at him, making him not wanting to come out", he explained and Dean let out a frustrated growl but said nothing.
He sat back next to Cas, "Listen up Sammy, you are going to go in, but you are not coming out without him", Dean warned and Sam nodded.
He skimmed the spells—one to go in, one to manifest inside Cas's thoughts, one to bring them both back out. Three spells. Not so hard.
Sam whispered the first spell and opened his eyes—suddenly, he was in the bunker's hallways, exactly as they always had been...
